Description
Warning: May feature a terrible title and historical inaccuracies.Well here we are, the first comic of the year! After a couple of years of doing these comics I've finally done something more historical based, which you should hopefully find fun. Some people I've spoken to weren't aware what countries the Vikings were from, nor what ones went where. (My housemate hilariously informed me that they'd invaded us (UK) in the 1800's. Rest assured I corrected her on the matter.)
It's rather fun drawing something which has more of a connection to my own nation's history as well (and hey look who I snuck in as a result). I was going to give England a nice blue sky, but the weather here has been terrible everyday that I've worked on this comic, so my British bitterness snuck into the comic. Apologies. 8I
Anyway, don't ask bears for help, and don't bribe Norse Gods, they know their stuff. Now go enjoy little Nordics, I'm sure they'll be back again.

Norway was actually a country as far back as the 800s, united by Harald Hårfagre. (oh fuck more kings dear god what will we do)
I am sure Denmark was a country long before that as well, since Denmark was the oldest settlement among the Nordic countries. There were several small battles between all the Scandinavian countries in the viking age as well, but people tend to skip that part entirely and make it seem as if the three countries were total friends. Norwegian and Danish runes have more similarities than Swedish runes as well, and the Danes and the Norwegians seemed more friendly with each other as far as I understand it.
Damn, I tried searching for the name Regnar, but all that came up were definitions, so I assumed it was a title XD why is google so bad when it comes to Nordic history :I
I think it's most important to remember Norway had a rather different culture than the Danes, and that they still do (since we had that huge 1800s national romance movement to "find ourselves" so to speak)
The Swedes?
We don't talk abut the Swedes XD

Always nice to become enlightened though I've never come across a source stating that Norway is that old - not that it's easy to tell just how old a country is. I know Denmark is among one of the oldest of all countries (probably when taking independence into consideration) and it's the oldest of all the Nordics (it became a so-called country in the 10th century) and so to my knowledge, Norway cannot have been a country in the 800s.
(Yes, too many kings to keep count of xD)
Yeah, it's funny how non-scans always think of the Nordics as a brotherhood with a bond that's inseparable when truth is, we don't like each other much unless someone "attacks" us from outside Scandinavia. I guess then, we will stick together just a little xD But it's a shame that we don't talk more about the fights between the Scandinavian countries since I think it's interesting ^^
I have no idea xD But lots come up when I search for him o.O? Regnar is actually a legend and no one is sure if he actually lived ('cause Vikings and their sources, lol). He was related to a Dane and son of a Swede, but became a Danish king (according to the legend, of course) and he went to fuck up the West, as the vikings do best. I'm in no way saying that it's not possible the Norwegians were there first, especially since (as far as I remember), Regnar only wanted to go West 'cause he had heard tales of people traveling to the West and finding loads of treasure. That might very well have been a Norwegian. But in the end, during the Viking age, there wasn't much difference between the Scandinavian countries. They were all Norse, after all.
Yeah, fuck the Swedes, loool xD

Well, I am not sure where you pull our sources from, but wiki has the history, and yes, Norway was an assembled kingdom in 872.
In fact, the article has sources from pre-history as well.
"Harald Fairhair (Harald Hårfagre) unified them into one in 872 after the Battle of Hafrsfjord in Stavanger , thus becoming the first king of a united Norway. (The date of 872 may be somewhat arbitrary. In fact, the actual date may be just prior to 900)."
This is also taught in history classes and Norwegian classes and is a fact every Norwegian knows. While the Norway from back then wasn't as big as Norway today, it was still unified Norway, known as Norvegr, "The Northern Way".
While yes, we were all Norse, I would not agree with "being the same" as Danes had a more direct route to trade with mainland Europe, while Norway had to rely on the sea for resources. Trade was sparse unless they went viking, and seafarers were extremely normal. All main cities were established along the coast for this reason, while Danes could easily get what they needed from land. This also meant the Danes would be easy to attack from land, as Norway could only be attacked by sea or Sweden.
That makes major differences in culture and language. Although similar, they are far from the same.
I don't think Denmark is the oldest established "Nation" but country? yes. Earliest archeological found in Scandinavia is from Denmark:
"The earliest archaeological findings in Denmark date back to the Eem interglacial period from 130,000–110,000 BC. [27] Denmark has been inhabited since around 12,500 BC and agriculture has been evident since 3900 BC. [28] The Nordic Bronze Age (1800–600 BC) in Denmark was marked by burial mounds , which left an abundance of findings including lurs and the Sun Chariot ."
While the earliest found in Norway:
"The first inhabitants were the Ahrensburg culture (11th to 10th millennia BC), which was a late Upper Paleolithic culture during the Younger Dryas, the last spell of cold at the end of the Weichsel glaciation. The culture is named after the village of Ahrensburg , 25 km (15.53 mi) north-east of Hamburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, where wooden arrow shafts and clubs have been excavated. [27] The earliest traces of human occupation in Norway are found along the coast, where the huge ice shelf of the last ice age first melted between 11,000 and 8,000 BC."
So yes, Denmark is the oldest inhabited COUNTRY, but maybe not Nation?
Since you can't find this on wiki when searching simply for "Norway" I am wondering if your internet is selective. I wonder if mine is too considering I never found Regnar anywhere :I

Again, I'm not trying to start a big history debate or anything 'cause I really am no good at history xD
I use wiki for quick information, but in this case, it's sources from everywhere. The things I've said are things I've read from numerous places. I'm not against wiki, but it is a fact that everyone can edit what it says and the best way to get a clear view of whether or not what it says is true is by reading the same article in different languages. For example, the article about Regnar is very different in Danish, English and Norwegian. The Danish article stated that he was a Danish king. The English stated he was a Norse ruler. The Norwegian states he was a half Swedish and half Danish king. When it comes to these things - especially on wiki - the sources will be colored by people's opinion. Even a small statement like that can change a lot in the end. Especially if you don't read everything through and just go for the most obvious points.
Here's the Regnar article from wiki: no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar_L… - he's spelled Regnar in Danish, but regardless if I search for Regnar or Ragnar, I still get lots of articles.
As for being the same, it was in noway meant literally It was compared to other countries, at the time. There's a reason we were called Norse people when outside Scandinavia. Our cultural differences were not big enough for them to recognize us as different countries every time they came across Norse people. I've been to Norway and Sweden and I'm well aware we have different cultures, languages, history. And obviously, the location of our countries have a lot to say about our histories.
I never said nation. I have no idea what nation is the oldest. Never checked that out ^^ Also, the oldest country is different from source to source 'cause it all depends on what factors you take into consideration when trying to figure out which country is the oldest.
I probably could find it. I wouldn't know, I never looked it up on wiki.

Guys whilst this looks really great on my comment count I don't really want this to keep going. XD Baby Norway got invited to England for tea one day (how when England has never met him before? Don't question that shhh...) and that is how they first met. Legit history right there I swear on my cat. He's a wise bugger.
Now then continue this elsewhere or so help me little Swe might get involved with an army of bears in tow and you don't want that. 8I Trust me, kid's got a lot of bears, and a Finn. That is like 100 bears in one man. Much bear. Wow.
