Description Coming back from a meeting with Councillor Tervos, John and Jane are ambushed by Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani of Westerlund News. Jane immediately stood proud waving to the amassing crowd obviously proud to introduce her brother to the galaxy. John wasn't so enthusiastic recalling the amount of times in his own reality that he had butted heads with Khalisah al-Jilani.

"Commander Shepard, Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani of Westerlund News." Khalisah introduced herself to the pair. "So this must be your brother, is it true that you originate from a parallel reality?"

John saw the question was directed at him. "Yes it is." He remarked, a man of few words.

"Rumour has it that you lost the war with the Reapers and you never intended to cross into our universe. Is there any truth to that?" Khalisah remarked.

John grunted at the reporter, clearly not impressed by her words.

Jane noticing John's anguish spoke up: "Khalisah, the thing you must understand is the Reapers are a powerful foe, they have been wiping out civilizations for billions of years. With that in mind and the fact that John and his crew came from a reality similar but also very different to our own, you must understand that just because one universe fails to win the war doesn't mean another can't."

Khalisah looked from one Shepard to another sizing them up, clearly considering her next words. "Are you saying Commander that we have a chance against the Reapers?"

Jane smiled. "Of course, as long as we continue to unite and help one another. The Prothean's failed because for one they didn't have the advanced warning we had, but more significantly was the fact that their strength became their failing. They all thought the same, all their subject species eventually adapted to the Prothean way of thinking. Our cycle is different, we embrace our differences and together it has made us strong. It's because our differences and our cooperation with one another that we can defeat the Reapers."

"Is that much the same in your universe Commander?" Khalisah asked John. "Why didn't you succeed?"

John sighed. "The problem with my universe was our leaders, I had warned them for years about the Reapers and yet they did nothing. I brought them evidence and they still failed to act, I was convicted as a war criminal trying to slow the Reapers down and still they continued to do nothing. If it wasn't for my allies, both in the Alliance and among the other races who continued the effort of unification and preparation against the Reapers we would have never made it as far as we did. It was our leaders that failed us, the heroes were the men and women who faced the Reapers on the battlefield, fought such an overwhelming adversary and never surrendered, never retreated they fought with every ounce of strength they had."

Jane could see the anger in his eyes. He was pissed, both at Khalisah for asking the questions and the Citadel council who had done no better in this reality as they had in John's.  "Khalisah, what you should take away from this, is John and his crew are here to help us, they have brought with them advanced technology they are sharing with us but more importantly foresight, they know what lies ahead and while they might not be able to stop every Reaper invasion on every planet, they are giving us valuable intelligence that might just give us a more favorable outcome."

Khalisah remained silent for a moment processing what both Shepard's had said. It was a bit to take in, the interview she had sprung on the pair hadn't gone as she had expected. It never did when Commander Jane Shepard was involved. Finally she spoke:

"There has been rumours of a secret project designed to defeat the Reapers, do you have any knowledge on the topic?"

Jane put on a friendly expression. "I have been given the mission to unite the galaxy, ready to drive the Reapers out of the galaxy. I can't say what others are doing with the resources they have available. My main concern is to make sure we're ready and have as many dedicated and focused on the goal ahead of us."

"I see." Khalisah replied, somewhat not believing that Jane knew nothing of that subject. "One last question Commander, how does it feel to have your brother back, who you lost all those years ago on Mindoir?"

Jane beamed. "It's been great, to get a second chance at something is a rare thing in this universe. Together we will stand united like the galaxy and face the Reaper threat head on. I take it as a sign that better things are ahead and all of us will get that chance once we defeat the Reapers once and for all."

They walked away from Khalisah and the crowd and John remarked on the interview. "You should have let me hit her."

Jane laughed. "Don't tempt me, but we need her. We need the media to spread the word and help to unite the galaxy. It's the only way we'll win." She paused and looked at John. "Don't tell me you..."

"No." John answered rather quickly. "Though in my reality there were times I was tempted."

Those damn reporters, play a renegade and you can hit her in ME2 and ME3, or hit her anyway and get renegade points for it.

This is a remake of my older render, not really that old as I only did it yesterday. In fact my original intention was to have the pair in fatigues rather than armour. Something I wasn't able to do first time around until Padme4000 directed me to one of her awesome mesh mod packs. Many thanks for that.

The original can be found here:

This is a sneak peak or teaser for my Mass Effect - Parallels fan fiction I am writing. You might notice Jane's uniform is red, I decided to show some more changes between the two universes. After all minor changes are possible between alternative realities and this I thought was a subtle way of having one.

Jane extracted by minor texture edits by me.

Thanks to   for directing me to the XNALara/XPS software that I used to position the models in.
Thanks to   for his Daz3D tutorial that I used to render this in.

As always fav's and comments are appreciated.

Did you edit those texture yourself or did you use already made ones? Because they look very much like the ones I did.

Yay for differences. I always liked that with Star Trek how the parallel universes clothes looked different as well even with just minor changes. So I really like how you chose to go for it here too

Thanks, I thought a little change like this would make a big impact on the fact that's it's another reality and not just the same with a few people missing or added in.

Yeah I mean the amount of different possibilities that could be different. Like little things and then with some major things.

I agree, still figuring out all the changes to be honest. I will probably brush up chapter 2 at one point to go over some more of these changes. The characters I have release are semi-draft ones anyway. I just wanted to get people's opinion on the story before I get too far into it. Being sick has pushed that to the back burner for now anyway.

I can understand that completely. It's why I'm questioning myself with the chapters I've already done of my fanfic. People have favourited and followed which means I must be doing something right but its nice to hear feedback as well.

I don't like flame reviews but even those can give some sort of feedback lol. even for someone to say they like the idea behind the fic, characters or setting. or even say what they think could improve. I've not written something like it in quite some time so even that would be helpful.

I mean I reread my chapters quite a few times before posting them but even then I sometimes miss things. Like the fact I accidentally called medi-gel, omni-gel. If I hadn't looked at that chapter while writing a later one I probably wouldn't have noticed that mistake. So its also nice for people to point out little things like that.

I really hope you feel better soon

Thanks .

Yeah feedback comes in all forms, even negative feedback can help though some people I think need to learn how to give constructive feedback rather than outright insulting. Still feedback is feedback.

I often go over what I wrote so many times it's not funny.

Yeah I agree being outright insulting doesn't help. I did have that once happen in the past but luckily not since. I mean I've read some reviews people have given others and I wonder why they have to get so personal sometimes with their reviews.

I have problems where when writing a sentence my head comes up with the sentence but the whole of the sentence doesn't get written. When I reread it my head can skip a word so I don't notice that I've done it. Its like my sentences are lost in translation from my head to my hands. Sadly happens with talking as well sometimes where I skip a word because my brain thinks I've said it or written it down already.

I've seen people do that and then I kindly tell them and they are thankful about it. But once I read a review someone left and it appalled me that they could say such things. Not going to repeat what they wrote but it was basically questioning the persons intelligence.

I do that quite a lot. I tend to try and take a break and come back to it later as sometimes that helps me find mistakes I don't find if I just keep rereading.

I have that same issue, I often re-read what I write as I do also miss things and skip words. It's part of a speech problem I have, it's genetic and I've had it since I started talking. Hits males on my mothers side and sometimes a female might get it as well. Thankfully it isn't too bad, it was when I was a lot younger but not too bad nowadays.

I think too many people are over emotional these days especially on the web. They see something they don't agree with and rather just accepting the fact people won't agree on everything and everyone is different they just jump down the other's throat. I've seen it too many times, been there once or twice myself sadly. However the older I get the more I think to just ignore what is said and just move on without commenting. It's easier that way, life is too short to have arguments over insignificant things online.
