Description
An [adult swim] show? For my Cartoon Network & Sega crossover, Multiversal Collide? That’s new for these previews! Yep, [adult swim] and Atlus are in that crossover drawing I’ve been working on, for those of you who haven’t known yet. This side of the crossover got announced on November 11, 2021 with the release of Chowder and Ristar, as I figured I could use Sega’s purchase of Atlus back in 2013 as an excuse to include [adult swim] shows from Cartoon Network. Makes this crossover I’ve been brewing even cooler, huh?
And starting off the previews for this section of the roster with Smiling Friends, out of all shows, is the smartest idea I could’ve had, because today is the one-year anniversary of such a tremendous show not like any other adult cartoon that I’ve seen, especially in recent years! The idea of these characters (the main ones being Pim and Charlie, shown above) who try to bring positivity and happiness to all of these lost cause kinds of people who all look like they’re far gone and fucked up beyond all repair is such a unique concept for an adult cartoon comedy show in a world filled with shows that just do nothing but sadism for the sake of it and nothing more beyond that (which was always my biggest problem with Family Guy even during its ‘prime’ years [the fact that it got played almost every single time by my ex-stepfamily, who I have mentioned as abusive as fuck many times before, didn’t help its image for me either], as well as all of the deservedly short-lived and forgotten failures of the world like Drawn Together and Allen Gregory). My most favorite episodes have to be ‘The Silly Halloween Special’ and ‘Who Murdered Simon S. Salty?’! Add in its mixed media animation (making it feel like an adult, somehow even more bizarre version of The Amazing World of Gumball), the almost complete control of what goes on in it from creators (and NEWGROUNDS animators!?) Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, and a season 1 finale that features Gilbert Gottfried in his final released performance during his lifetime, and you get what I’m already calling the best show [adult swim] has ever made and aired by far in their entire over 21-year-long run! And with it having been confirmed a few months ago by Warner Bros. Discovery themselves as a show they’re still going forward with (miraculously surviving Hurricane Zaslav), I cannot wait to see what Hadel and Cusack bring in store for next time! And it deserves to be the first [adult swim] show that I showcase for my Multiversal Collide project!
Next week (January 18th, to be exact), the previews for this project will be back with the first Atlus characters to show, and with a more traditional start as well with Morgana from Persona 5 & Jack Frost from Shin Megami Tensei.
Smiling Friends is owned by Warner Bros., Williams Street, and Goblin Caught on Tape.
