Description
Up there, way up in the sky
Amongst the velvet black, with diamond-like stars
The aurora borealis dances, a burst of colour none can deny
And none can claim it, because it is not ours
A city there within, it looks so very nigh
But we don't belong there, since our home is here.

First things first: This was inspired by The Golden Compass, I think. I'm reading the book right now, and altough the writing is a bit odd sometimes, it is marvellous.
Also, I think I learned a great deal from painting this. I had no idea how I was supposed to paint the northern lights, but I tried out a technique that actually worked out quite well. Next time, I'll be even better! Then, I won't do the mistakes of making the colours too saturated (as you can see, I did now). But I just kept adding more colour until it looked fine, but then I realized I used too much! And I really wanted to use green instead of this red, and pink/purple instead of yellow. But I rarely use red, so it was fun.
Since I've been feeling worried, depressed and lonely this semester, I haven't painted anything. But I went to a welfare officer, and that eased me up a lot. All my barriers went down, and in went inspiration. For that, I am ever so grateful.

A help for anyone else who wishes to paint northern lights, and have never done so before: Paint the dark parts of the sky (which here is black) last! I didn't, and I regret it.

Painted with watercolours, and a few strokes of charcoal pencil to enhance fur details.
