Arapaima gigas, an amazonian species which is one of the largest of all freshwater fish and Megalania prisca from the Pleistocene of Australia was the undisputed king of the goannas, the country’s native family of monitor lizards. Whether it looked just like a huge goanna or just a komodo dragon is not entirely known, though in life it may have had strongly resembled a mix between the two, and given the arid climate of its habitat it may not have been entirely dark in color without any disruptive markings. Megalania’s may have eaten marsupials, birds and bird eggs, and possibly other smaller reptiles.
