Description
A huge Archelon ischyros glides gracefully with a school of small fish through the Western Interior Seaway waters of what is now the Pierre Shale Formation of South Dakota. The small fish help to clean off parasites sticking to the turtle’s leathery shell as well as to seek protection from large predators such as rapacious ray-finned fish, cephalopods, sharks and mosasaurs. This is especially true since none of them could directly attack a healthy, full-grown Archelon, let alone an injured, sick or weak one.
