Description
Map of the Archanian Federal Republic, which covers a land mass spanning thousands of kilometers from north to south, with borders stretching from the western side of the Mississippi River and its delta up to the shores of the Pacific. The country consists of eight main states (marked by a different color), a federal district known as “Henrasa”(within which the capital city of Henras, with a population of over 10 million people, is located), plus a number of small, insular protectorates scattered around the Pacific Ocean, with the exception of only two situated on both the Isthmus of Panama and on a far-western part of the island of Cuba. The only means of access to the Atlantic Ocean is by a piece of land in the far southeast which includes about half of the Mississippi River delta within its borders. Major cities other than Henras include: Sudaba (pop. of 9.5 million), Santsahu (pop. of 9 million) Durha (8.5 million) Bunha (pop. of 8 million) Ruhasa (pop. of 7.5 million) and Halbakan (pop. of 7 million).
The history of Archania can be traced to over 12,000 years ago, when the hunter-gatherer ancestors of native Archanians crossed the Bering Land Bridge and colonized the lands which soon became the country’s eight main states. After 10,000 years ago, many of their descendants began to settle in villages and towns and raise crops and livestock of their own (while some others continued to lead their old ways of living) and major civilizations emerged with laid the foundations of Archanian culture, government and society. Eventually with the gradual establishment of the eight states centuries later, there came certain times of instability as different peoples from each state competed with one another for control over territory and resources; this reached a climax in the early 15th century when the warlord Eatānu Rundaron brought peace and order to the warring states with the establishment of the Archanian Confederation on April 12, 1424.
The confederation era would witness great advances in culture, technology and society, including an age of exploration in which Archanians discovered new territories overseas and claimed them as their own, as well as wars fought against the expanding Portuguese, Spanish and Russian empires. Tensions arising over the treatment of French and German immigrants, as well as the adoption of western ideas and influences, eventually lead to a political crisis amongst traditionalist and secular non-traditionalists the early 18th century which lead to the establishment of the current Archanian Federal Republic in 1745, which was based on ideals of Archanian nationalism stemming from republicanism and the enlightenment era.
The Eight Individual States of Archania
The Archanian Federal Republic mainly consists of eight individual federal states, and each one has its own government and dialect of the Archanian language used there.
Aperha: The smallest state, covering a landmass of roughly 40,000 square kilometers, It spans an area consisting of mountain ranges to the east and the north, a valley of rich farmland and rivers in the interior, and smaller ranges spanning the pacific coast. It is also the first state in Archania to develop stable civilizations during the Neolithic Period. Aperha also used to be a part of the Nurdic Empire from the 14th century up until the early 17th century, when it gained independence and adopted its own constitution. Aperha has a strong economy centered around commerce, finance, informations technology, and industry, and it is also prone to more earthquakes than any other Archanian state because of a massive fault which stretches across the state’s interior. The state capital is Chehusu, which is home to corporations such as Fanhat and Holkan, and the largest, most populous city is Samsāra, with a population of about 6 million people. Other major cities include Madalassu, Lopalda and Tapparenu.
Berutia: The northernmost, largest and least-populous of Archanian states, much of it consists of vast boreal forests within its interior and vast arctic tundra spanning the upper half of the state. It is from this state that the prehistoric ancestors of ethnic home-grown Archanians entered the country from crossing the Bering Land Bridge. Its economy has historically been connected to coastal fishing, timber, mining and offshore oil drilling. The state capital is Tauvos and major cities include Hautta and Meutu.
Cresshia: A modestly-sized state with an strong economy centered on industry and finance, Cresshia has a very mountainous interior with grassland and scrubland towards the East, in addition to a rich heritage. It is home to many famous figures of Archanian history, such as the warlord Eatānu Rundaron, the pioneering aviator Yēra Konru, and the 20th century-general and future statesman Himmas Zornu. The state capital is Antsarra and the largest, most populous city is Durha, the third-largest Archanian city (behind Sudaba and Henras) with a population of approximately 8.5 million people. Other major cities include Tamāsa, Banrasa and Vasēnu.
Gaiantia: one of the largest Archanian states by land area, Gaiantia is home to vast grasslands, the Archanian half of the Mississippi River, as well as patches of boreal forest and lakes in the far north of the state. It has the second-smallest population among Archanian states and it has a largely rural economy centered around agriculture and commerce along its rivers. It also has more tornadoes per capita than any other Archanian state. The state capital is Rehūnu and other major cities include Passaba, Aulaton and Hanettu.
Hiretia: A largely coastal state situated north of Aperha and west of neighboring Valshia, Hiretia is home to vast temperate rainforests, rugged mountains along both the coast and within its interior, and cold ocean waters rich with plentiful fish and mollusks. As a result it has a rich economy centered around fishing, ecotourism, commerce and manufacturing, and its people are also proud of their rich maritime traditions. The state capital and largest city is Demāsa with a population of 6.5 million people, and other major cities include Katuva, Chatāga, Pogōna, and Hanasedu.
Nurdia: The southernmost of all Archanian states, Nurdia is a large state with a hot, dry climate full of many deserts in the west and north, mountains and scrubland in the south and around its interior, and grasslands, pine forests and humid wetlands in the far east, where the Archanian part of the Mississippi River Delta (and the country’s main gateway to the Atlantic Ocean) is. It has a relatively large, diverse economy centered around agriculture, commerce, manufacturing and informations technology. It boasts the largest population of any Archanian state, and its capital city, Sudaba, is also the second-largest Archanian city population-wise after Henras. In Neolithic times, ancient civilizations settled along its fertile river valleys and laid the foundations for its major cities and towns, and in the Middle Ages a powerful Nurdic Empire, ruled by a class of warrior-nobles known as Sanghas, arose and gained resource-rich territories in the north and east through conquest and subjugation of neighboring peoples. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the loss of Nurdia’s former possessions via several wars with other states led to a brief-but-bloody civil war among the Sangha nobles, who were split between moderate pacifists and hardline warmongers, as they fought with one another over control of the state’s future, with the moderates winning over the hardliners by a very slight margin. Major cities other than Sudāba include Antrucha, Danavasa, Kūtēnu and Muasavu.
Utia: A modestly-sized state with a mix of mountain ranges, scrublands, desert and salt flats, Utia has a rich cultural and natural heritage and an economy centered around commerce, heavy industry and informations technology. It is also an important hub for medical research and institutions, a reputation the state has had since at least the Middle Ages, and many famous Archanian doctors and physicians have been of Utic origin. The state capital and largest city is Rudāsa, and other major cities include Kaneva, Tessavu, Beudosa and Porahassi.
Valshia: The second-most populous Archanian state besides Nurdia, Valshia is home to grasslands and scrub in the east and south and pine forests and mountain ranges in the north and west. The state also has modest agricultural lands along its many rivers. Valshia is sometimes proud of its natural and cultural heritage (a sentiment it shares with some other states) and it has been the home of several major poets, writers, artists, politicians and philosophers throughout Archanian history. The state capital (and fourth-largest Archanian city population wise, with about 7 million people) is Bunha, and other major cities include Bratanstattu, Halbakan Luāsa and Fanahayya.
