This is a fanart of Nitori Kawashiro from Touhou, I do not own this character. The following story is my original idea and is not related in any way to the character's canonical story.

Humans have always striven for eternal life.
To a scientist like her, immortality was a lifetime goal. When she finally created a machine that allowed her mind to leave her dying mortal body and reside inside a crude but everlasting cybernetic construct, she knew she had not only achieved man’s wildest dream, but also found the key to unlimited knowledge. With her newly found immortality, she passionately studied the universe night and day, hoping to unlock all its secrets. Cheating death was not enough for her: now she wanted to know everything.

As the last humans on earth disappeared, the gloomy dead silence finally woke her up from the pursuit for knowledge that had lasted for centuries. She took notice of her surrounding: it was quiet. At first she was astonished at how much things had changed since the last time she observed Earth and uncovered its final mysteries. Then she started feeling lonely, and finally as more of her inner human awoke, fear dominated her mind. She was the last person on Earth, but she was not even a human.

She started crying. She cried for months, but no tears were shed…

Knowledge is meaningless to her if she could not share it with anyone, and she thought it was time to stop the meaningless pursuit. Her mechanical body might be tireless, but her human mind was worn out. Holding in her arms her former body that had been frozen in stasis, she realized she no longer wanted immortality. She desired eternal rest. However, immortality seemed almost irreversible, and so again, she started her studies, more determined than ever.

She had spent a life time looking for eternal life.
Now she would readily spend eternity searching for her final rest.
