As i'm remember in manga (original DBZ) Future Trunks already was a SSJ - when he trained with Future Gohan he fighted in SSJ form. In anime he has transformed after Gohan's death. I prever original because it was made by original creatorΒ

But, seriously. Gohan became SSJ2 just because his friends were getting attacked by Cell. Trunks should've gone SSJ2 because Future Gohan was his only friend and he had no one else left.

But Gohan had trained a lot,I mean,A LOT.Trunks trained really hard,but he didn't learned SSJ1 before Future Gohan's death.
Gohan has already SSJ1 and much power before his friends were getting attacked by Cell.
