Heh, interestingly enough that's how I tracked down your old Side 7 account. Something about posting his rival on deviantART as a mystery character . Which lead to somebody by the name of onilukos to track it down . Which lead to him getting some gift art from you shortly after .

The weirdest thing is that I didn't initially have the old drawing to use for a resource. Most of the design was based off of vague memory, but I did want to give him a huge overhaul from the get-go.
I didn't expect a lot of things to match as much as it did, especially the legs. But his sword was the biggest change, partly because the original wasn't as interesting. Also, it was originally a half-dedication to the past life of his newly-assigned inventor, before the properties were somewhat altered.

Hm, I thought you were referring to its design somehow. I must be mistaken.
It's essentially a motorized segmented sword. In the position shown, it's used like a shield, but it can spin on that circular base at the arm into a prepared position. The sword extends the segments to create a longer blade, and the motorized base can help swing it with arm motions for more effective use. (No, the sword does not become whip-like when this happens.)
Surprisingly, it's a more powerful weapon that his arm cannon.

I dunno why, but when I first looked at it, I thought the blades whipped around 180Β° and made like a "scissors" weapon. Β But at second-glance, I realized the whole unit probably turned and it was just a standard arm-sword weapon.
It doesn't surprise me that his melee weapon is more powerful than his ranged. Β I mean, look at Zero's Z-Buster compared to his Z-Saber. Β Even back in Mega Man X2, that thing was powerful. (Though it got a ridiculous boost in X3.) Β Even when it became his primary weapon in the later games, it was still more powerful than either X's buster or Axl's gun(s). Β And then there's the added bonus of the blade being able to cleave and rend, while most projectiles would only pierce...

At one point I did ponder over the blade being two halves. I also pondered making it similar to Ivy's weapon (from Soul Caliber) by making it act almost like a whip. But I opted to keep the blade one large sword to fit his heavy-duty build, and a whip-like sword didn't feel suitable for a souped-up police officer.
