Description
So, back on the 3D modelling game after a little while, and decided to revive a past project, the M-56 SMG of the UNMC. The original one i made probbaly over a year ago now, when i was first really getting into 3d stuff, so it was a welcome challenge to figure out how to re-make it and give it the "new" Contention style. I tried to keep some of the original silhouette in this new model, as well as some of the original details and such, but in the end i basically ended up redesigning the entire weapon from scratch which i think turned out for the best. The gun now looks much MUCH more sleek, curved, artsy, completely fitting with the UNMC weapon style. Its got a lot more detail, fine tuned additions and body shapes. For example, i experimented a lot with rounding out faces for this model, as you can see on the cheek rest and upper receiver, much more interesting than a simple flat surface. I also wanted to make sure i made the SMG look strong and sturdy as well, it fires .45 caliber rounds and needed to LOOK like it could actually fires .45 caliber rounds, which i think i pulled off fairly well. I'd certainly want to carry this if i was fighting 7 foot tall, armored, human hating life forms. Luckily, nobody here will have to do that and we'll just leave it to the guys (and girls) in the Contention book.I'm going to revisit this model soon and maybe make some additions to create a "stealth" version of the M-56 used by black ops teams and special forces in the UNMC, which the weapon was originally mad efor in the first place. I'm thinking a suppressor, optical sight, and maybe laser attachments.

You're a motherfucking incredible builder. You don't get the credit you deserve! These designs are incredible, both the guns and the spaceships.

Haha that may be the best compliment/comment I've gotten yet But i do agree with ya, i love this program and i'm really not even that knowledgeable in it yet. Can't wait to get into the advanced stuff

I like the original more than the remake. The new one has some nice detail, but it adds very little in the way of ergonomics and functionality, so I consider all that added detail a bit moot.
When/if you do another refinement of the design I would suggest you concentrate on making the weapon workable in terms of mechanics and viable for a soldier to interface with (comfortable grips and cheek weld). Pay a lot of attention to the width axis of the weapon, this seems to be the most neglected in scifi weapons. Are the grips to fat or narrow, are things too square where they need to be rounded for the user, can the magazine fit the rounds you claim and does the barrel match too, do your attachment rails work? Lots of things to make sure you get right.
More detail isn't better, it's just more. Shoot for better

You make a lot of good points there too, i'll be the first to admit that sometimes I have trouble keeping the balance between functional design and the "rule of cool" kinds of design, trying to get better with that. I do actually put a good amount of thought into little details like that (sometimes too much), like the size of the grip and what needs to be rounded or kept angular, magazine-barrel ratio or what needs to go where and all that fun stuff. This model I got kind of ahead of myself and went for a cooler look just to try and push my talents I suppose. At the same time, I've tried to stick to a design philosophy with UNMC weapons that they're very, i guess "showy" for lack of a better word. Usually they seem quite overdeveloped and with a lot of focus on aesthetics and sleekness, however they all have a reputation for being solid, powerful and very advanced. I'll have to find a good middle ground between that philosophy and functionality as well. Still, there's no reason not to go back and play with the model design to get it right.

I love the gun but i will advice you to kill that barrel tip. It belongs to snipers and MG's.
sub-machine guns are small and very easy to handle (take a look at an mp5 and mp7) but this version has the body of a n assault rifle and the magazine of an smg.
If you wish to add equipment like laser, ACOG, scope, and all that.......SIDERAILS ARE NECESSARY

You're absolutely right about this model! For this one I was focusing more on making something cool looking rather than actual functionality and realism, but I think i'll be making this the next of my Gen 2 remakes! So it'll most likely get a huge facelift soon to make it more grounded in reality

I like your style, its extremely unique! but you need to apply more functionality . The models you have seem to be as heavy as a human

Oh they really were before i started this whole "Gen 2" series where I redo my models to look more realistic, this model will definitely be getting that treatment soon. I might keep the basic shape but it will look much more functional.
