Specifically, or generally? They're Odyssey I astronauts.
It sure looks like a parasite, but it's actually not! A lot of trees like to have archer growing on them because it kills herbivores and provides nutrients that might be lacking in the soil. Some trees, like this one, even have specially adapted lower limbs for supporting archer growth.

Not quite. This was a "test" arrow that missed and caught in the clothing because the archer didn't know what it was shooting at. The one who's standing cut it loose from him and is holding the tether only. The full attack would happen a few seconds after he stands up.
