Description
The brittle tree grows on the coastal shrublands of East Pandaros on Ilion . The tree grows rapidly to a height of 30 meters before splintering, rapidly again, under the strong easterly winds. Other trees in the area have no trouble staying upright, so what gives?
For the brittle tree, falling is just another phase in its life cycle. The tree produces flying seeds while growing, but unlike other pterosperm trees, no pollen pads or other receptacles can be found on the base of the trunk. These erupt only from the stump of a felled tree. Seeds travel long distances to these outgrowths to be fertilized before taking off again in search of a place to take root. To a biologist unfamiliar with the workings of Ilionβs life, this might look like an interaction between multiple species: a dying tree, a fungus, and an insectoid pollinator, perhaps.

The concept reminds me of some tree species that depend on forest fires to produce or disperse seeds. Otherwise, it's an original and unexpected take on the idea of reproduction through self-destruction.

Beautiful. What kind of ink markers did you use for this?

Hmm, that's actually my favorite pen to write with. Did you use water to thin some of it out, or did you do all of that with just good fine motor control?

Water. Pilot pens are soluble and will act like watercolor on bristol paper. There are also soluble Tombow markers that I use for a softer effect.

Another masterpiece from you, ma'am, is always a nice thing to find. If I may ask, though, why does the tree grow so high if it's only going to collapse most of that material to get the stump? It must be terribly damaging to itself (and to the trees around it). Also (forgive the rude questions) does the tree regrow once it's fruited, or does it just die?

No, it dies. It grows tall to give its seeds a better chance. They are weak fliers and do much better if they start from a height. Also, it has more sun exposure and can spend that time storing energy in its roots. As the tree ages it puts less energy into reinforcing its trunk and more into the roots, and that's why it falls.

Fair enough. No offence meant.
