It had been busy here for the past couple days while we were getting the siding on our house replaced. Busy and loud. So I didn’t have much time (or privacy) to work on some of my bigger projects. I did get the chance to practice working with colored pencils again though.

This is a re-rendering of an image of the character Doh-Li I found on the True Tail Tumblr page truetail.tumblr.com/post/59004… I saw the trailer for this project a couple years ago but I had forgotten about it until I stumbled upon it again earlier this week. I found Doh-Li’s and Kranikus’ to be my favorite and the most interesting characters, and not just because they’re magic users. They’re also the only mythological animals: Doh-Li’s a kirin (or qilin, however you want to call it) and Kranikus is a phoenix. I’m not very familiar with kirin or Asian mythologies in general, so I decided to draw Doh-Li rather than Kranikus.

I’m still having trouble blending colored pencils well and getting solid colors and smooth gradients like I tried to achieve a more realistic look like in this drawing derivedjam.deviantart.com/art/… but it didn’t turn out as nicely as I had expected. I’m still pretty happy with it though.
