Description Be sure to check out my "Easy" bird tutorial as well: [link] :3

Edit: Thanks for the info: depending on your oven, you might be setting the temp. to 130 degrees celcius (which is the equivalence to 275 farenhait).

A few people have been requesting a tutorial for my clay stuff: [link] , so I decided to make one while I was home from college (and within reach of an oven! ^^).

Thanks to everyone for all the favs and comments on my cosplay stuff! They motivated me to make this tutorial.

Time to make this bird: 2-3 hours

This bird was given to my Tobi....because being Tobi means you get free stuff from Deidara ^^

Deidara and his clay creations are owned by himself and Kishimoto-sensei.

Thank you for the tutorial! I've just ended my first clay bird. It's not as cool as yours, but at least it can stand by itself XD (dunno for how long XD i've put a toothpick inside the legs and in the neck as a reinforcement) I've used a modelling paste which doesn't need to be baken. It only needs time to harden. The worst phase was the neck-feathers one, i did it several times T-T
I've uploaded a pic of it XD
Thanks again!

Wow this is so cool! I've been trying to bake clay too but I'm concerned about the oven... it says I shouldn't use the oven after baking clay in them (food poinsoning I guess?).

Is it safe to reuse the oven to bake real food after baking clay in them? And if not, do you just keep a special oven just for clay, or do you clean it each time you bake? Thanks!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to ice-tears [2008-08-08 05:05:21 +0000 UTC]

well, I've never used any kind of clay that had that kind of warning on them...

I always bake my clay on a baking sheet with some wax paper under the clay. (that way, the clay never touches the baking sheet and so you can still use the baking sheet for food afterwords)

ice-tears In reply to Malindachan [2008-08-12 21:36:17 +0000 UTC]

It didn't say it on the box, but I researched polymer clay online and it all said that. But as long as nothing happens, I'll use my oven then. Thank you! :]

wuah it's an interesting tut *_*
what material do you use to paint over clay, so that it shines in the end o.รด I'm just being curious, hope you don't mind.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to lona-green-butterfly [2008-07-31 19:16:14 +0000 UTC]

well, I use acrylic paints to paint them, but then I coat them in a glaze to give them the shine (but the glaze is optional. I just like it because it keeps the paint from getting dirty)

awesome tutorial. i was making the bird with the regular sculptey. like... the white one. and it always melted and got fingerprints all over it. so i was wondering since i never used super sculpey clay if that clay you were using did the same thing. because your bird looked so perfect and mine looks like a melted mess or maybe i just suck ._.;

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to lulz-chan [2008-03-30 23:35:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hear regular sculpey isn't the best stuff to use (I haven't actually used it though)
Super sculpey should be a bit easier to work with.

fxxo3 In reply to ??? [2008-03-15 05:12:24 +0000 UTC]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to fxxo3 [2008-03-15 05:35:50 +0000 UTC]

well, the clay won't harden if it isn't baked and "cured" (when it's been baked and cooled) - unless you have some sort of non-baking clay that hardens after sitting out for a while.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

fxxo3 In reply to Malindachan [2008-03-16 01:58:59 +0000 UTC]

uh..thanks..my clay aint for baking tho...but ill just buy more clay for that teardrop bird thingy..lol
thanks again..your tutorials are awesome

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to fxxo3 [2008-03-16 03:47:02 +0000 UTC]

well, you can still use non-baking clay to make them :3
I just prefer the baking kind because it's usually stronger

AkatsukiDonut In reply to ??? [2008-03-09 04:12:16 +0000 UTC]

Wow sounds easy~ <3 But will the paper strong enough to balance it???

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to AkatsukiDonut [2008-03-09 04:58:34 +0000 UTC]

well, the paper doesnt' make it stand up - the body sits on the same level as the feet

you can make the legs out of clay instead, but since they looked paperthin in the show, I just went with paper legs

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

AkatsukiDonut In reply to ??? [2008-03-08 12:09:25 +0000 UTC]

do you mind teaching us others? like spider

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Malindachan In reply to AkatsukiDonut [2008-03-08 18:52:31 +0000 UTC]

maybe when I have more money and time.....(and access to an oven)

The spider isn't really hard at all - you make a snowman shape out of clay, pinch the front for the pincers, and poke in the eyes.

for the legs, I just taped/glued some paper strips to the bottom after the spider body was baked and painted.
