Description
Be sure to check out my "Easy" bird tutorial as well: [link] :3Edit: Thanks for the info: depending on your oven, you might be setting the temp. to 130 degrees celcius (which is the equivalence to 275 farenhait).
A few people have been requesting a tutorial for my clay stuff: [link] , so I decided to make one while I was home from college (and within reach of an oven! ^^).
Thanks to everyone for all the favs and comments on my cosplay stuff! They motivated me to make this tutorial.
Time to make this bird: 2-3 hours
This bird was given to my Tobi....because being Tobi means you get free stuff from Deidara ^^
Deidara and his clay creations are owned by himself and Kishimoto-sensei.

Out of my own curiosity as to what the company would say, I went ahead and contacted them. they sent me this reply:
"Thank you for contacting Polyform Products Company. It is perfectly safe to bake your clay in the oven in which you prepare your food. Polymer clays do not give off toxic chemicals in the curing process. There is a slight odor, which is not harmful. If possible, have an oven hood fan in operation. It is a good policy to do this anyway when curing polymer clays, just in case it would scorch. We always recommend using an oven thermometer (available at most grocery or hardware stores). Many times, ovens are not calibrated accurately, and are actually hotter than the temperature set on the dial. Just pre-heat your oven for 15-20 minutes which should be long enough to reach the temperature on the oven thermometer needed to cure your project. If you would feel better doing so, just wipe the oven down with soap and water and rinse with clear water.

ummo... i haven't tried this out, and is rather new at sculpting... so i have to ask: is this ok to do with self-hardening clay? i noe it's a lousy question, but i hope you can advise this newbie (me) here... thanx

Malindachan In reply to UzumakiNarzaki [2009-07-03 17:30:41 +0000 UTC]
I know some self-hardening clays can either be more fragile or less likely to hold their shape if you arn't careful. It's all up to you as far as what kind of clay you wish to use. I just prefer super sculpey because it's supposed to be shatter-resistant.

I wouldn't use model magic. It's not flexible enough and won't retain the shapes you want, I find. it's like marshmellow, smells funny and takes like salt, but the good side to using it is that if you drop it, it won't break. It's actually really bouncy. We roll it into balls and play handball with it. ^^

Ack! you make it look so easy! XD i've tried like 30 times to get the right head and body shape. The super sculpey is so...moldable I keep flattening the body without noticing. TT_TT

well, if super sculpey is a bit too soft, you could try the "Firm" Super sculpey.

philophobic13 In reply to ??? [2009-04-30 00:20:53 +0000 UTC]
Can you use normal clay for this? Like the kind you have to fire, not bake?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Malindachan In reply to philophobic13 [2009-04-30 01:40:12 +0000 UTC]
well, if you do that, then you need to follow the rules of the fire-type clay (like, watch how thick you're making it, and give it a vent hole or two or else it'll explode in the kiln)

what's the general content of the glaze? I never used a glaze before, and I was just wondering, cause it looks great on that other picture with the hand-mouth and the bird.

I just used a paint-on glaze that I got from the hobby store. It's not something you have to mix or bake.

wow, really good and very helpful ^__^. One (or two) question. Where did u get the clay for this? and how much was it?

Malindachan In reply to Sunshine--lass [2009-01-20 22:54:51 +0000 UTC]
I got my clay from a local hobby store (like Hobby Lobby). It usually runs around 10-14 a box, but depending on where you get it, it can sometimes go on sale or you can use coupons.
