Description
Be sure to check out my "Easy" bird tutorial as well: [link] :3Edit: Thanks for the info: depending on your oven, you might be setting the temp. to 130 degrees celcius (which is the equivalence to 275 farenhait).
A few people have been requesting a tutorial for my clay stuff: [link] , so I decided to make one while I was home from college (and within reach of an oven! ^^).
Thanks to everyone for all the favs and comments on my cosplay stuff! They motivated me to make this tutorial.
Time to make this bird: 2-3 hours
This bird was given to my Tobi....because being Tobi means you get free stuff from Deidara ^^
Deidara and his clay creations are owned by himself and Kishimoto-sensei.

it can be depending on where you get it. I sometimes get it at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby and use a coupon to lower the price a bit.

of course, as you can see in the comments, you get the credit for the method of making it. ^^
i just used air-drying clay instead of super sculpey, since super sculpey costed the double and i hadn't that much money.

I can't find a decent clay to work with. Where can I find Super Sculpty clay or another good brand of clay. All the clay I own falls apart no matter how well you mold it.

you can get super sculpey at craft stores like Hobby Lobby or JoAnn's
There's also other kinds of sculpey that come in different colors, but they arn't as durable as super sculpey.

it wasn't too much, but I can't say that I remember the exact amount. one box of super sculpey made me at least one of these and a dozen smaller ones (in my "easy" bird tutorial)

I can't wait to make one of these, but, I really need help.
Can the bird dry itself until it becomes as hard as rock WITHOUT the need of baking it in the oven?
Please reply as soon as possible!

super sculpey cannot harden until it has been baked. You could use an alternative though like Model magic (which is an air-drying clay). It would be more fragile, but it's good for non-baking projects.

I made one a couple of days ago so that I can give it to my friend as a Christmas present.
I did mine without legs though. Haha
That way it just sits and has a lesser chance of falling and breaking.
Then I find your tutorial.
Haha.
Good job.

The only issue I had while making this were the feet.. And I still don't think I got them right. Honestly, I think the feet took me about the same amount of time as everything else did. I'll be sure to give a link for when I am finished. Also, the "burnt" picture of the bird looks amazing, really. Reminds me of a Phoenix. If I get the right colors I might mimic the coloring.

Cute bird. I added foil infront of the bird before baking so the beak wouldn't get smashed, but the legs cracked and broke. Well, the bird's beak didnt get distorted but now it has no legs. I started cracking up

I rly need help oO
I have heard that it is dangerous to bake it in the same oven as u cook food in, and that it increases the chance of cancer.
I really want to begin to make clay, but i am unsure if i have to buy a new oven for that..
Plx answer soon ^^

I think it really depends on how often you use it and how you use it. According to the box, it says "not intended for production baking or commercial application in ordinary home equipment"
It's mostly saying that it's not intended for baking in large quantities or for regular use. I personally don't bake my clay on the actual pan's surface (and I always wash my hands and don't use tools I eat with), and the number of times I actually use super sculpey is rare. Looking around on the web, I found this forum: [link]
I'd suggest giving the entire thread a look-over.
what stuck out the most to me was the information in this post: [link] ostcount=16
Luckily, I've only had a couple small burning incidents, but I'm not sure if it was enough to do any real damage. It sounds like most of the concerns though involved people who use polymer clays frequently.
I'd recommend buying a small toaster oven if you still have concerns. From the sounds of it, you can get one for as cheap as $30. I've been thinking about getting one myself, but I haven't made anything with super sculpey in a year and a half XD

Diraira In reply to Malindachan [2009-09-18 12:06:16 +0000 UTC]
Hmmmm.. Maybe you are right, but a toaster oven is a microwaver (I suck in english)?
Cuz' at Super sculpey's site they say that they highly recommend NOT to use microwaves..
T_T

Malindachan In reply to Diraira [2009-09-18 16:07:49 +0000 UTC]
there's a difference between the two though. Toaster ovens heat things like a regular oven - you preheat it and it bakes things more evenly. A microwave heats things up a lot faster, but it doesn't cook as evenly. I'm not exactly sure what the company would say about toaster ovens compared to microwaves, but they are different.
I know they make microwave/toaster oven combos, but I'm not sure what the conditions of those are. I'd just stick to a regular toaster oven if you can find one.

Sooooo...
I've read a little around, and it says that the clay releases toxic gas at 250-275 F.
What is the standard degrees of a toaster oven?
(Am i bugging you?) xD
π: 0 β©: 1
Malindachan In reply to Diraira [2009-09-18 16:24:43 +0000 UTC]
I dunno? I'm not an expert on all this stuff >___<
well, I believe a toaster oven can go to some of the same temperatures as a regular oven. Super sculpey clay is supposed to be heated at 130 degrees C (AKA 275 degress F) but is the level of toxic gas dangerous?
You might just have to email the super sculpey website personally and ask. They're probably a lot more helpful than I am.
