Some explanation is probably needed. Okay so this is Ghost Hunt another work by the ingenious Fuyumi Ono. Most will probably recognize Naru and Mai but there will be a spoiler section for those who know the third person.: Non-spoiler explanation:
Simply Mai's "Dream Naru"'s smile is what causes Mai to look at Naru in a different light rather than his normal "I don't care because I'm the best" attitude. I thought it was funny because she pretty much loathes him otherwise.

So the third person is Gene, the real "Dream Naru", Naru's (or Oliver's) dead twin brother. I'm pretty sure this is accurate information even though I have not read the novels. I have read the manga. Anyway I really wanted to portray a certain unexpected or strange fascination from Gene to Mai, to symbolize the feelings Mai has for Naru are actually for Gene. When I found out it wasn't Naru smiling at her it really hit me hard!!! I had to get the feelings out.

Wow, one of the most powerful Ghost Hunt Fan arts I have seen. It really relays the emotions of the characters, (Even Naru's "non" emotion, but we all know he is hiding stuff inside XD) Wonderful art!

In my opinion, I think Mai loves Gene like a brother and he likes her like a sister. Plus, if he WAS alive, he'd try to get them together with VERY bad results..........for him anyways

Lawl, I love it but I don't think she's in love with Gene. It's clear that she is greatly attached to the entity or spirit of Gene, but she still has feelings for Naru/Oliver as she wouldn't be able to stand his narcissism, or any of his little remarks. Yet she continues to fall for him knowing full well that the dream "Naru" and the real Naru/Oliver are never going to be be the same person. In the end she goes back to working for Naru/Oliver as his assistant. Now they don't end up together as a couple in any of the series whether it be Novel, manga or anime but the affection that Mai has for Naru/Oliver is still there and can be identified if you think about it.

This is soo cute and deep! I love NaruxMai, but I think the story would get more interesting if they had a bit more "Eugene" in it - even though he is pretty much the main plot twist.

But Naru smiled at her too,and that's pretty amazing..so I guess it's a bit like Shinshi Doumei Cross,where the guy she loves turns out to be two guys.

I love this picture so much. It does pain me that in the novel Naru said that to Mai. I was so mad at that, but I have some hope for the television show and manga, because i don't know why but their relationship seems to be more close in the television series. Noll is just so hard headed, then again Mai is too.

Me too. When i read that mai wasn't in love with naru, a part of me cracked.
And i still enjoy mai+naru('cause, even though i like masako, i don't want her to be with him >_<
Also i think is too easy to love gene, 'cause he's too nice, and cute, and handsome,...
But it's hard being in love with naru...ya know...the guy is dificult to deal with! XDD
