Description
Finally decided to color this drawing. The color schemes are based on the comic book versions of Scrooge and Flinthart rather than the Ducktales animated versions, which had Scrooge in blue and Flinthart in, I think, blue and Scottish plaid. Of course, in the comics, Flinthart Glomgold is from South Africa, not Scotland like Scrooge is, so it wouldn't make sense to give him a kilt. I'm surprised at how few people seem to remember Flinthart from the cartoon, he was always one of my favorite bad guys from the show. Oh well.Related content

In my mind, Flinty is Scottish born, South African raised. To me that makes more sense than having him be either one or the other, especially given the historical context of his character.

Ah, Ducktales I loved that show.
I did think it odd that the two richest citizens in the American city of Duckberg were both from Scotland.
Glomgold being from South Africa makes a bit more sense. He was one of the funnier baddies without actually being thick.
We have a few episodes on video and the movie. I watched some of the eps we didn't have on YouTube.
Nice artwork. Very nice. Favy'd

Aww I love it, I've grown up reading the comics and Scrooge is my favourite character. I have the book "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" by Don Rosa and it's expecially evident in the stories in it how multi-dimensional Scrooge really is. He's such a tragic character, though, in a way. Your illustration of him is truly spot on!

Technically, he COULD have been descended from Scots and was interested in keeping his heritage.
But I don't know him from the comics. ;D

LOL! That's kewl!
The way I heard it (or read it, rather) was that Disney changed Flintheart's
nationality from a South African because of the apartheid thing. As
if THAT wasn't enough of a travesty, they sugarcoated 'Glommy' until he
was just a pesty rival of Scrooge, rather than an actual enemy so ruthless
as to make the Beagle Boys look sweet. Bleeagh!
Memo to Disney: there is such a thing as being TOO 'p.c.' Glomgold is
South African, get over it!

Yeah, Flinthart is a real slimy character, even more so in the comics. He was a decent foil in the cartoon as well. There's an episode of Darkwing Duck where he appears in the background at a villains' resort. But his true origins are in South Africa, where he probably became a greedy jerk working the diamond mines.

Have you read The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck? That gives a pretty good intro to Flinty and his character. He was sorta working in the diamond mines, but more precisely he was stealing.

mallaard In reply to mouselady [2006-10-10 20:20:31 +0000 UTC]
Actually that's the only comic with Flinthart in it that I've ever read, so that's how I knew he liked hanging around the diamond mines...although you're right, he wasn't exactly working them. I like how Scrooge describes him as being even more of a scoundrel than the Beagle Boys, because they at least wear their criminal tendencies on their sleeves, while Glomgold is a two-faced backstabber.

mouselady In reply to mallaard [2006-10-11 04:01:35 +0000 UTC]
Amen to that! I don't know how many other comics had
Flinty in them, but I wouldn't mind checking them out sometime.
Yeah, the Beagle Boys are mean, but in a funny way. Like that part where they were just delirious because President Teddy Roosevelt arrested them: "Wait'll we tell Ma!" They have their endearing qualities...

That it certainly is, although the direct influence for this drawing was Don Rosa, who of course is a giant advocate of Carl Barks. Glad you appreciate the retro style here. My only exposure to these guys as a child was through the show Ducktales, so it was interesting to see how they were originally meant to be portrayed. Flinthart is evidently also South African, not Scottish. Go figure, huh?

I think you got the characters perfectly. They might not look exactly like the ones in the comics but the poses and such are great.
And... Don Rosa? You lucky!

It's a pity those conventions are a bit too far away for me... I'll hope I'll meet some Dutch Duck artists at the Dutch comic convention this year. (Daan Jippes, Mau Heymans, Wilma van den Bosch...)
I have no idea what kind of person he is, I just read all his stories, and that's about all I know.

Well you'll be glad to know that Don Rosa is a really cool guy, and certainly one of the more interesting comic artists to talk to at a convention. I hope you'll get to meet him someday, although I don't know if he travels outside of the U.S. very much.

I know he travels often to Scandinavia, since the Ducks are enourmously (probably wrong spelled) popular there. Donald Duck is also very popular in Holland, but in another way. The artists themselves are not so well known and the Scrooge 'book' is not published in Dutch.

I've been wanting to comment on that for quite a while already, finally I get to leave a few comments on my devWatch I've always been a fan of ducktales, be it of the animation in tv, or be it of the books. I think you depicted that style well, even if the faces don't match the originals to 100%
your beaks seem a little more narrow, and the eyes bit too big, but other than that, it looks good. the way dagobert smashes the other ones hat/head just made me laugh, and reminded me so much of the originals
what is probably bugging me most about this is the colouring, which is way too soft, it really harms the image. hard, or even custome brushes would have definitely been the better choice I think.
Also I suggest putting in a horizon line, as well as giving dagobert a slight shadow. just because an object is in the air, doesn't mean that it does not cast shadows both things would help the eye to locate where each character is
anyway, nice work, and sorry for my late commenting!
Daniel

I think it's funny that Uncle Scrooge is called Dagobert Duck in Germany. My friend once downloaded the German version of the Ducktales theme and we were bowled over by that fact. Maybe you could answer this question that we had about that; is Dagobert a reference to a German figure whose the equivalent of Ebeneezer Scrooge, or does the word Scrooge have some kind of strange or awful meaning in German? I was just wondering why the name was changed.
Anyway, I can't argue with any of your suggestions, and in fact I'm in a process of touching up a lot of my older work so I may well go back and make those additions sometime soon. That, BTW, is why a lot of my older pieces might be coming back up in your watch list. For instance, I doctored the Dragon Duet piece so it's not so gray and muddy, it's much cleaner looking now. I'll be doing that to some others too. And thanks for commenting, I don't mind how late it comes!

Awesome pic, firstly. I don't see much fan art of Fliutnheart at dA, even though he's the breatest Duck-universe villain. I really likeyour portrayal of both him and Scrooge. Now, if you think Dagobert Duck is a change, you should know some of the swedish names:
Scrooge McDuck - Joakim von Anka (von is german xD)
Donald Duck - Kalle Anka
Huey, Dewey, Louie - Knatte, Fnatte, Tjatte (no real names)
Flintheart Glomgold - Guld-Ivar FlinthjΓ€rta (changed flintheart to last name)
Goldie O'Gilt - Gullan Gyllenlock (has Gooldilocks for last name)
Daisy Duck - Kajsa Anka
The Beagleboys - BjΓΆrnligan (has been changed from beagles to bears O.o)

That's really interesting. Does that mean the Beagleboys are actually supposed to be bears in Sweden, or is that just how they're named? You're right, Flinthart is a great villain. He's pretty nasty.

Linneasan In reply to mallaard [2011-02-07 09:10:19 +0000 UTC]
He sure is. As Rosa himself said, Flintheart can be downright murderus.
I don't know if the Beagle BOys were supposed to be bears at first. Though they gave their granpa the lastname Beagle... So his name's Bear Beagle... xD
