Lost in her memories, D.I Sunderland would stay late at her office after her fellow officers had gone home. she threw herself into her work..writing up reports and filing paperwork more efficiently than half her station. but her boss had noticed. he'd noticed her defiance to stop working so hard, her long hours and the faint smell of alcohol. he'd seen this before. detectives who love someone so much that every aspect of their lives begin to suffer.
Emmie had become belligerent, snappy and irritable since april. her collegues had begun to make complaints. her judgement was impaired..and she almost got an under ranking officer killed.
her D.C.I entered her office late one evening, to find her quickly swiping tears from her cheek and drawing in breath through her nose. she knew what he was going to say.

he'd allowed her a few weeks off, full pay. she was a damn good copper, and he couldn't afford to lose her. he sympathized, having lost his wife a year or so earlier..so arranged for some counselling for his faithful D.I.
but she couldn't bring herself to part with his dog tags. she held them as she drifted off to sleep, and kept them close by..just to feel as though he was still there with her. though he was never really hers to begin with.. he'd always avoided any sort of affection. but that meant nothing. she loved him still, and she always would.
she'd decided to take a flight back to America, to see her old uncle Frank and cousin James. she knew she'd be able to relax, then.
she was given a warm welcome, and she managed to relax as she confided in her favourite cousin. his voice always calmed her since they were children. one of her secrets was that james would read to her over the phone when she was back home.
now all she had to do was sort out that overflowing filing cabinet in her mind. file away the memories of him, and try to avoid taking them out from here on. she couldn't risk putting lives at risk because her mind was somewhere it shouldn't be. she knew this now.
