A B25 Mitchell. The plane Jimmy Dolittle's company flew off the deck of an aircraft carrier to bomb Tokyo. In order to lighten them up enough to take off from such a short deck, they removed all the guns and ammunition and only fueled them with enough gas to fly across Japan and (hopefully) land at friendly fields in China. Most of the planes actually made it to safety. Some historians say this was done to shock Japan and prove they were not invincible. It was one of the turning points in the war in the Pacific.Β
My dad worked as flight crew on a Mitchel in the South Pacific during the war. Β
