Any constructive advice on how I can improve my future drawings would be greatly appreciated.Original- 9-22-12 manaista.deviantart.com/art/Li…
Well I’m not too happy with how this came out. I’m still screwing up on my anatomy. Bit by bit, I am slowly learning to hate my stuff a little less. So he is basically a recurring secondary character. He is not really there to move any story along. He just does what giant monster skunks do best. I feel like story and character development weigh me down sometimes, so I just kept the personality and origin simple. He started out just as a random crazy idea, but then I just had an itch to keep drawing him. There is a lot more to come including a fight with my little electric porcupine. manaista.deviantart.com/art/Po…

"LIL STINKER DON'T GIVE A FLIP!"
Bully- He has learned that even some of the some of the toughest monsters will avoid him and the threat of getting sprayed. He will intimidate other monsters, steal their food, and take their home with just a raise of his tail. He will sometimes spray in an area (or right at them if he is in a bad mood) just as a reminder who is boss.
Attitude of humans- He sees them as a food source. He only attacks humans when he is hungry or provoked. Other than that, he really doesn’t care. He sometimes wanders into cities in search of food which usually will end in an attack and a very bad smelling city.
Attitude of other monsters- Lil Stinker is known to be pretty aggressive to other monsters. He usually only attacks monsters smaller than him for food and shelter, but he will go after bigger tougher monsters if he is desperate. On the rare occasions there is plenty of food and space, he can be a somewhat docile creature to live with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not much is known about his background beyond the theory that he received a very high dose of a strange alien microbe from a series of meteors that struck the planet and mutated many creatures.

Just about anything he can fit in his mouth.

Hmm, that's a thought!
It might make it too easy to track him though. Follow the stank on the ground.

You have way more patience for drawing buildings than I do - I actually kind of hate them. I think the first picture of this guy was maybe a little too meme-referencing, but he's a rather fun character.

Thank you I do put a lot of work into the surroundings, so I'm happy to hear people notice the work. I admit part of why that is because I noticed many other artists, especially the "popular" ones, don't seem to do it. That, and it really does make the picture more fun to do. Yeah I felt that way too about the meme thing...maybe a little too much internet
For a giant rabid rampaging skunk, he is pretty fun to work with. Thanks again!

I get what you mean, there seems to be a lot of white backgrounds or abstract stuff from even people that do fairly detailed characters. I'm trying to make myself do more with settings and surroundings, but it's easier for me if it's a more natural one.

Possibly... Although I think the fan boys would hate me for that...
More along the lines porcupines, rabbits, armadillos. opossums, raccoons, and other little critters you may typically see on the side of the road.

Thank you very much comrade! It is fun drawing cities, then destroying them with a giant monster!
I just looked him up. I see what you mean with the cities, but his stuff is still way better! I like his shading style. That might be something well worth practicing. Thanks for showing me to another awesome artist.

Sorry I haven't been around in awhile, but I've been meaning to tell you this looks awesome. I love the amount of detail you put in this one. The buildings, the vehicles, the innocent bistandards down below. It all looks amazing. And from what I can tell everything looks very well scaled. Again great work dude.

Nah it's okay man, but thanks so much!
There's still a few issues I need to work out with the anatomy, and I think I could still add in more details. The pose feel too stale. Yeah... I think a giant monster isn't a giant monster without some sort of environment/city to wreak havoc on
This guy really has grown on me over time, so there will be more of him and other crazy monsters in the near future.
Thanks again!

There's still a lot more I need to fix, but I am slowly hating my works a little less. I have become a big fan multi-point perspectives, that's for sure
Youtube has some pretty good tutorials for perspective too. Just type in "Two point perspective" or "Three point perspective."

While it may not be perfect, your anatomy has made major improvements and the detail and texture on the fur looks really good. The bio is nice with some original powers and gives the monster some personality which is always a plus. However the thing that continues to floor me about your art are the backgrounds. The amount of detail is staggering and the perspective is well done. If I had any complaints it would be that the cars look a bit to squishy and the destruction on the buildings could be clearer but those are nit picks at best. All in all a good picture and glad to see you back doing art again.

Thank you very much buddy!
Yeah the anatomy has been plaguing for some time now. I think what's bothering me the most is how the overall position feels too stiff. Like his movements don't seem natural. I think I am a big fan f multi-point perspectives now. There's something fun about building cities... and then destroying them with a giant monster I just need to figure out how to make the details more crisp.
Thanks again comrade, I'm glad to be back

No problem friend, any time!
No worries I can saifly say I know how you feel as my anotomy is far from perfect as well. I can't agree with you enough on the multi-point perspective, as it looks much more realistic than some of your earlier attempts. (Not that the backgrounds were bad back then, just that the point it was coming from was way to clear.) That dose sound like a ton of fun and I'm sure you'll get the small details down eventually.
And again it was my pleasure.

Looks really good, Mana! Your creature here is nicely fuzzy, and it's well blended too! Of course, your city is amazing, like always, so perfectly aligned and ready to destroy, haha! I love all your tiny details- the pieces of the buildings that are falling are all 3D, the cars in streets are less focused the further they get away from the viewer, the carnage that's barely visible behind him... it really is well done. I hope you're proud of this piece! (looks familiar, too. >.> Have I seen this before?
)

I have admit drawing cities with multi-point perspective and then destroying them is pretty fun
I could still use some work on the anatomy and more details though. I think the biggest thing bothering me (no pun intended) is his overall position... it feels too stiff and stagnant.
This guy has grown on me over time, so this is not last you'll see of this stinker
On a different note... I was briefly annoyed at some "quality" groups that declined this because: "it looks incomplete, it's too sketchy, it looks like a child drew it, blah blah blah." Don't worry though, I got over it in about thirty minutes after a nice talk with some friends on Skype. I tried being patient with some the groups at first, but now I'm not going bother tring to meet their quality bs.

Hmmm, okay. I'll take a closer look at your anatomy, then. It's hard for me to see though, because I do not usually delve into animal anatomy but usually those of humans or dragons. Have you used any reference photos to help you draw them a little better? I guess the only thing I can think of right at this moment is that the claws would be a little more shapely to paws and the like. And he's not too stagnant, though he's not in an entirely unique pose. I guess try to watch some good Kaiju movies and watch how they bend around buildings and try to reciprocate that?
If nothing else, there's the Avengers with those weird armored wyrms. o.o (and the hulk, might be a good anthro type anatomy to follow).
As for the groups, I'm sorry you were often declined because of that D: That's dumb, your work is obviously a refined sketch, and I would not want to ink that, nooo way.
And if they say a child drew that, I'd like to see THEIR kid draw such amazing perspective work, that's for damn sure. >.> You do better perspective work than sophomores in college, haha!
And it's also very clean.
But whatever. You don't need to share with groups whose noses are that far up theirs.
My recommendation for groups would be to try to find some smaller groups and try to integrate yourself with their community, so that when you try to share something they'd appreciate it. You never know until you try!

Sorry I'm giving a real late response to this one...
I have used a few reference pics to get a general idea of what things should like, but I typically do not follow them too closely. Drawing super realistic stuff way out of my league. I think the biggest challenge with this guy is finding a good balance of animal and somewhat more human like features. Too much animal and it just looks like a giant version of the animal, too much human and it looks a big furry. You are right about the claws though. It's weird because they do not come straight out of the tip, but they not that far up like human nails.
Yeah I just left those groups now. I lost my patience with them. You are very right about joining smaller groups. My strategy has been to put in all the groups that fit to get the largest audience. Putting more focus on the smaller groups is a good idea though. Now I am avoiding groups that put too much enfaces on quality control. I also noticed that the groups with a high number of admins tend to be the problem groups.
Sorry I'm late responding to this one so late. I just hate "x"ing away well thought out responses. Thanks again for your very awesome feedback!!!

It's okay dear! I am the same way, as you know. A good response deserves one in kind.
As for the progress, you'll get there!
And the groups. >.< Yeah. I'm part of a group for fantasy animals but the admin, the creator, he has strict quality rules. A bit strange, to me. But I focus on the quality of the image- whether there's soul in it, or not, and he has his own version of combining them. Eyeroll. Too complicated for me. I just hope you can find the best place for you!

manaista In reply to Reithya [2013-12-06 05:37:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah I looked at those groups for a bit. They may not be my cup of tea though. I will say this... at least it looks like those groups you admin in do a better job of warning people that they do high quality control. I don't mean to be disrespectful or any thing, but I fail to see the logic in any strict quality control. It seems like more work on both ends with a very high risk of pissing somebody off. I told the admins of one the groups that I felt disrespected me that. They said it was because they had a few people complain how there were too many pics to look through in their inbox. I honestly find that lazy on the user's end. Do you really need some one else to tell you what good art is? If an artist is really good, wouldn't they stand out no matter what? Do some groups seriously feel their value comes from how exclusive they are? It just seems like too much work for too little results.
sigh....I don't know....hopefully
I try my best to setup watches based on friendship, but...I don't know...I feels like I'm having a harder time starting even a basic conversion. It feels like a lot of people losing interest as I slowly try to stop being a whiny little mope.
I'm so so sorry, I'm just venting again for some reason...

Hey, Mana, it's okay. You're doing your best, and that's what counts.
I'm your friend!
And I know that a few of my friends have said, hey, manaista is really funny, I never realized that! And I'm like, yeah man, he's awesome! I told you!
Seriously, that happened, I'm just not gonna quote it directly to keep it a surprise ;D
I don't like his quality standards, to be honest. It's why I don't invite work into the group. I want to make it my home, but, I'd rather just have a group for my friends, I guess. I dunno really. Maybe there is not real home for me either, despite being able to show my work in more groups than yours, it's not like, they appreciate me anything more you know? It's just "another" deviation in the stack. If people don't like all the photos in a stack, they can "x" it away, seriously.
That's what I do, EVERYDAY.
I can't keep up with everyone I watch now, plus extras from groups. And I'm finding a lot of people are REAL dicks, if you'll excuse the term, and I just hate the art entirely. I'm just gonna end up unwatching them, because I can't handle their attitude, tbh.
So hang in there, dear! For me, okay? I need you.
