So the response to showing my cover process seems to have gone over well so I thought I'd do more! (that and I can post without having to draw anything new
) This was the first cover I did to kick off my Legion run. Needless to say it was very daunting. So many characters and I have never done a team book before so I was bit unsure of myself. But it was a LOT of fun! Brings me closer to what I loved to draw when I was a kid and that was super heroes, and I definitely got what I asked for! Inks by Livesay awesome as usual. I worked with him years ago, actually on my first project for Top Cow so it was kinda full circle to be doing my first work at DC with him. Colors by long time friend and collaborator Brian Buccellato, I love working with him and it was a shame that we were unable to do the book together but it was fun having him color the first few covers of the book.

those livesay inks really go well with your pencils. great job! by the way, your iron and the maiden run was incredible. i really love danimations' digital paints on your pencils.

Beautiful work, its nice to see your artisitic process step by step. Is there any chance you will be teaming up with Aspen, Blur and Jason Rubin for more "Iron and the Maiden"? That was badass and one of the few series I was picking up. Too bad its over.

thanks! Iron and the Maiden was an absolute blast to work on. The first story arc was just a 4 issue mini series so it kinda ended when it was suppose to. I do know though that Jason has a sequel planned, there is still so much story to tell and tons more characters! and I'd love to be a part of it unfortunately he'd have to be a patient man since I'm just a little under half way through my DC contract which has me with them until 2009.

ITs really cool, specially the effect of lightning in Lightning Lad's hand in the pencils. About the redesigns of the costumes did they asked you to redesign Cosmic Boy too?

I've seen the legion go through so many variations. I still have Legion of Superhero poser on my wall from 20 years ago. I forget who the artist was.

thats awesome! they're a great concept and I think with them it's really all about execution since you can literally do whatever you want with them take them anywhere around the universe on endless mission possibilities!

Very cool stuff. Thanks a lot for posting these too man, it's always great to see someone's progress through a piece and the step between the sketch and pencil stages here are great.
How many initial sketches would you usually work with for a cover like this?

depends sometimes I do just one cause I really like it and I figured the less option they have the better chances the pick it..hehe.. but there are times when I'm really not sure what to do so I end up with 5-8 proposals for a cover design.

Yup I did. But this cover was kinda a work in progress and there are so many of them so to be honest I drew redesign sketches for some while others I designed on the fly as I drew the piece thats why some of them didn't differ too much or at all from the original ala starboy. As for how it worked I asked if I could and they said ok!

nice! I really enjoyed the redesigns, I know Jim is a BIG LOSH fan so i would have thought he'd feed you with a lot of input on the new looks.
And how is Brian doing? I have'nt seen him and Xochil in a long time, what books is he working on right now?

Thanks! well Jim gave me a description of their physiotype. He felt that they all looked the same figure wise so aside from that noone really gave me any direction in terms of where to bring them so I just had fun. I didn't really do anything fancy I just tried to simplify and make them more iconic. I'll post some of my design sketches here soon.
Brian's doing good, he's working on Exterminators and has been working on his writing so he's putting together pitches for tv and etc.

very nice, it must have been a lil frustrrating with all the characters but i can definetly see how it would be fun. love the planets in the back ground as well as the crater their on. Your characters are very powerful and show tons of personality. amazing pencils. may i ask how long it took you to finish this? i should suspect it took you an amazingly short amount of time. haha

thanks! yeah it was LOT of fun! It didn't take me too long at all actually I was having so much fun on it I kinda just kept going. I beleive it took me a day and half... the part that held it up at times was that not all of them were redesigned yet so I was kinda redesigning on the fly with some of the characters.
