Speaking of interpretations, I can give one. Since to clear the map it's not essential to kill him, I'd rather have that he withdraws from the battle once Roy defeats Murdock, to live in the exile in shame with his perceived failure. But Milady finds him and knocks some sense into him, showing that he still has something to live for, and their loyalty shouldn't be to the ruler of Bern per se, but to Bern's future.
