Description The first painting I've done in over two years. I've decided to try and paint scenes from books, and I started out with painting the meeting between Bastian and Grograman/GraΓ³gramΓ‘n from the amazing book "The Never-Ending Story" by Michael Ende. I'd like to do more scenes from this particular book, since it's so rich and varied, but I will have to see how and if I can do that in a good way.
This is also the first time I've tried acrylics out. It was different from oil and I'm not sure what I like the best, but this is definitley cheaper.
Anyways, I hope you like!

Can't do anything else than agree. I don't think I can ever et tired of this book, I keep returning to it over and over. I've wanted to paint scenes from it for a long time, but I doubted I could do it any justice. Thank you for your comment!

Wow, this is really good! Your family is naturally talented.

And my mom wants to know, "How the heck did you do this?"

Haha, thank you!
To answer your mom's question... well. I painted. And re-painted. I think there's at least ten layers of paint over the mane, because I couldn't get it right. I was incredibly frustrated. But it all turned out okay, and I also used a paint with a glistening metallic look to it, for the eyes and some of the mane, that added a bit more dimension

That's cool! You should do another painting sometime! You could do one from The Dark Tower or something like that! That'd be fun to see.

Painting something from teh Dark Tower would actually be really fun. I'll have to find a scene that works on canvas, too

Sweet! Let me know if you decide to do something from The Dark Tower and what scene you're going to paint.

Ooo. Have fun!I liked that movie when I went and saw it. When you get back, we should have a discussion about it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-06-23 05:46:05 +0000 UTC]

I had fun Me and Siri went on a bit of a shopping spree and I bought a couple of things on sale; a vest that was pretty cool, a headband and a scarf. I also found a very cool necklace in the form of a real, functioning old-looking clock Siri bought new shoes and something else I don't remember Then we watched Pirates 4 in the cinema. I thought it was okay, but not as good as the other Pirates-movies :/ But I thought the mermaids were really cool. They made me want to write a story about mermaids similiar to them What did you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-06-23 06:17:44 +0000 UTC]

That's good. The necklace sounds very cool and interesting. I'd like to see a picture of it, if you don't mind sending one.
I liked the movie. But, my all-time favorite Pirates movie is still The Curse of the Black Pearl. Although, I did like On Stranger Tides more than At World's End. I thought the third movie just went on for too long. And I agree with you on the mermaids: they were really cool. And creepy. My favorite scene is probably when the mermaids attack the men in the boat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-07-17 23:42:49 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I've forgot to take a picture of it. I will!
I also think Black Pearl is my favorite, but I think the entire series is pretty good - it's not that often you see movie keeping such a high standard throughout all the movies.
I think that's my favorite scene, too. And I do seem to have a fetish for Johnny Depp in eyeliner. He makes that role so, so good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-07-18 15:50:42 +0000 UTC]

Yay!
True. They're all enjoyable and fun to watch, even the third one.
What's with girls and celeberity crushes? I remember when I was younger, my mom had several celeberity "boyfriends": Clark Gable, Jeff Goldbloom, Michael Ball, and Sean Bean. And, my sister really likes James Dean and James Franco. My friend Kristin has a crush on Heath Ledger's Joker, which is very disturbing. Then there's you, who has a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp with eyeliner.
Although, I'll admit Johnny Depp is a very talented actor, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio.

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-07-26 02:48:53 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I've never been much for celebrity crushes. I think fangirls are kind of scary. Still do have a squealing fangirl that breaks loose from time to time before I manage to sedate her again it's hard not to get excited at some stuff, like Harry Potter, the sexy lead singer in bands I listen to, or Depp in eyeliner but I have never had a celebrity as an imaginary boyfriend I stick with drooling over google pictures
James Franco looks good, although I think he looks incredibly sad all the time, as if he's going to start to cry
Hahaha, well, the Joker is cool! Maybe not sexy, but still very fascinating, like Lisbeth Salander in the Millenium movies. I'm a bit fangirly about her as well, even if I'm not turned on by her
I think it's a mix between good-looking and talented, then But hey, a lot of men look really nice in makeup, to be honest. Brian Molko, the lead singer I mentioned before, once got the question "How do you manage to look so cool wearing makeup?" in an interview, and answered: "Try holding an instrument at the same time, it does a lot for the whole picture." XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-07-26 04:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Fangirls ARE scary. I know a couple, and it's really disturbing.
That sounds healthy.
I'm not much for celebrity crushes either. Sure, I think some actresses are attractive, but I don't obsess over them like some other people do.
That's funny: what you said about James Franco. My mom has always said the same thing about James Dean. What's even funnier is I think James Dean is an inspiration for James Franco.

That quote is true.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-08-11 04:59:54 +0000 UTC]

Ugh, rabid fangirls are really scary, I agree. I remember when I went to the premiere of Twilight in 2008 and girls has written "Edward" all over their faces...

Now that you mentioned it, they do have some similiarites. Although I haven't watched many movies with James Franco in them.

I guess it depends from person to person - my sister absolutley HATES men in makeup, she thinks it's the ugliest thing ever, while I can find it rather attractive depending on who's wearing it and how well he's managed to do it Not everyone can pull it off. Same goes for girls really, some women should just dump the makeup.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-08-11 15:39:23 +0000 UTC]

That's terrifying.

The only James Franco movies I've seen were the Spiderman movies. Although, he's also in Freaks and Geeks, and I watched a few episodes with my sister, which were funny.

I agree! About girls and make-up. I find it bizarre how some men wear make-up, but that's just me.
Although, with girls, most of the time they're wearing TOO MUCH make-up, to the point where they look like prostitutes, which isn't very attractive.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-09-01 18:16:06 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe

I've seen the Spiderman movies as well, but Franco also played one of the main characters in Tristan & Isolde, a movie I watched for school after reading the book. A terribly romantic movie, but okay I guess.

The lead singer in my favorite band Placebo once got the question how he could look so sexy while wearing makeup, and he replied "Try holding and instrument at the same time and it improves a lot..." now I get the feeling I've told you that quote before.. :S
No, that's definitley not attractive. I used to be addicted to makeup in high school, not so much foundation, rouge and that stuff but rather eyeliner. But then I was actually out with people all day long, now I'm just at home or take quick trips into the village, and I've discovered I'm far too lazy nowdays to put makeup on for such small things like shopping groceries It's far more comfortable without makeup of course, but I also feel good once I have makeup on, so it's a tie

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-09-02 01:04:58 +0000 UTC]

Tristan and Isolde is a play, correct? Or is it a novel?

Yes, you have said that quote before, when we first started talking about guys wearing make-up.
As for me, if I ever had to wear make-up, I'd be very uncomfortable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-09-09 08:56:07 +0000 UTC]

It's a novel. Although, from the start it's more of a legend, then written down into a book by a French guy named Joseph BediΓ©r. I read it in high school, then had a lecture on it during University as well. The movie is very different though.

^^
Haha, well, if you'd like it that would have been fine by me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-09-10 02:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Most movies based off books tend to be very different, which is sad.

Well, I don't, so you'll have to deal with it! Mwahahahahahahaha!!!!
Although, I remember one Halloween I went as Kurt Cobain. This was back when I had long hair, of course. Anyway, I remember my sister put eyeliner on me, which was kind of weird but not too bothersome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-09-25 09:09:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but in the case of Tristan & Isolde, where the original is just a legend, I guess the movie is just an interpretation. The movie is good on it's own, not if you compare it with the book

Hahaha
As long as you remember not to rub your eyes, eyeliner is cool ^^

I've seen movies like that, or TV shows, that are based off a book. The movie or show are pretty good on their own, but as an adaptation, they suck.

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-09-29 16:07:47 +0000 UTC]

Exactly (wow, I can write the letter x today! For some reason it doesn't always work for me here on dA, even though it works in Word and other pages).
Same goes for The Shining, I think.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-09-30 01:00:12 +0000 UTC]

Yay! That's weird, how x doesn't show for you sometimes.

I'll have to agree with you there. The movie was pretty good, but the book was so much better. There were so much the movie didn't even touch on. I know a TV movie was made based off The Shining, but I haven't gotten around to it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-10-05 07:02:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, every time it happens I think I should tell you, but it's hard explaining when the letter in question doesn't work

The tv movie was the one where Stephen King was more involved, I think it's the one I've seen. It's a good adaptation of the book, but worse as a stand-alone work. And the effects in it are laughable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-10-05 20:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, now I'll know what happened when there's an X missing from one of your messages!

Was it the one with Jack Nicholson? I remember you mentioning laughable effects when we talked about the movie before, and the effects in the Nicholson one were pretty laughable. I just want to be sure if we're talking about the same version or not.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-10-15 15:09:22 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, if I can't get around the x words

No, it's the other one. The one with Nicholson is the bad adaptation but good as a stand-alone piece, the other one is good as an adaptation but can't really stand on its own legs. It's a mini-series in three parts. Here's the trailer: [link] The special effects are hideous.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-10-15 21:39:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah-ha! And I can see what you mean by the effects being bad, such as the clip with the hallway twisting. Not very convincing. Looks very dramtic, though.

MandaOwl In reply to HamiltonJames [2011-10-18 18:19:14 +0000 UTC]

No, and you should see the scene where the hedges are moving. My god, I actually laughed. I tried to find it online but with no luck.

HamiltonJames In reply to MandaOwl [2011-10-19 02:31:10 +0000 UTC]

Aww. That's sad when a horror movie/miniseries turns out to be funny because how laughable it is.
