Description I'm not too terribly happy with this photo, It's a first attempt and feedback would be nice. I had never taken pictures at a hockey rink before and the lighting was pretty terrible as was shooting through the glass. I have a new found respect for sports photographers not.
The elements of the photo that I do like about are the movement that can be seen in the background, and the depth of field.

This is a lot rougher than your usual style. If I could get rid of the interference from the glass, I would, but otherwise I am not struggling with it. What I really like is that the focus and depth of field make the referee looks like the calm eye of a storm, which gives me this nostalgic feeling of being a kid and trusting authority to always be fair and right in their judgments.

I do wish that this shot was zoomed out a little; I feel that the referee's skates being cut off just where the blades attach to the boot isn't an artistic decision, but a limitation of your shooting space and it comes through slightly awkward. I think the picture would be better balanced if you could actually see his skates grounded on the ice. Such zooming out would also help resolve the visual tension of the partial, blurry figure on the left border.

On the whole, I think you did well with what you had; moving humans are a difficult subject and the limitations of an arena make for a difficult setting. I am surprised and pleased to see you working on "action" shots and encourage you to keep at it.

Thanks, I was pretty frustrated with the environment, but there were a couple of shots that I was pleased with. This was the best of the shots with the ref. It mostly had to do with having the best depth of field of all of the shots, which I felt was a better choice then any of the other options....
