I knew about the real Manhattan project, but I was only guessing about the movie purely on the basis of the shape of the bomb, and the kid in the movie makes his JUST like the one in the comic.

I have a feeling this bomb is going to take two tries to get right. An apple barrel isn't going to contain the trigger blast.
Criticality isn't what they're going for. Criticality is what you want in a nuclear reactor, because that's the point at which you get an energy-producing chain reaction. To make a nuke, you need SUPERCRITICALITY.
That's why the gunbarrel design worked...not only do you have enough material in one place for basic criticality, but you have the collision of two masses to produce supercriticality at the contact surfaces where the fissile material is squeezed together tightly enough so that the distance between nuclei is actually reduced...it's almost like explosive welding.
Maybe if they use Pinkie Pie's party cannon...load one half as a projectile, secure the other half to the muzzle...it even has its own onboard trigger device.
