Aw, yeah, Derpy!
The steam from the muffin is actually the way it's done in the show. I think I got the reference image from "Applebuck Season" with the baked bads fresh from the oven. I gotta say I agree with you that it does look pretty flat, though.
I actually considered having Scootaloo go to Cloudsdale for this, but then we realized that she can't really fly, and so couldn't get there. The credit for the liquid rainbow goes to *Birdco , since he put it in his Mythbuckers comic with Derpy. That's the real setup for this.
Inkscape is a beast, and if you can manage to tame it, it's very powerful. It takes a lot of practice and trial and error. Also, the online manual is very helpful.
I was a little iffy about leaving it free of dialog, but I wanted to give the sense that we were watching this from afar and couldn't hear what was being said. If I went back to improve the piece, I'd add a binoculars mask over it to indicate that. I'd also redraw them in the last panel to look like they were actually in the middle of a walk cycle.
