Description
Redo of one of my old projects from 2015/16.Scenario: In a distant future Antarctica is no longer the barren frigid white land we know today. Instead temperatures are mild and the biome is similar to that of deciduous forests and taigas.
For this future scenario I designed three "possible" evolutionary descendants of the penguin that would still roam here. They are:
Orange Gullet (A) - The rise of plants and trees has presented alternative food sources for the new generation of penguin, reducing the need to hunt in the sea. In this instance their evolution opted for a build that was more suited to a terrestrial lifestyle. To traverse the terrain much more efficiently the Orange Gullet had evolved longer legs and a slanted posture with a long tail for balance. The neck has also evolved to be much longer (and highly dexterous) as to easily reach the vegetation they eat. The orange coloration on the neck is more vibrant in males.
Crowned Stiltwalker (C) - The Stiltwalker had evolved an alternative approach to covering ground in its environment. It relies on its massive forelimbs to move around quadrupedally. The metacarpals and phalanges have a thick layering of keratin that fortifies these areas and helps support the weight that is distributed here. They also double as formidable weapons which they primarily use to defend against predators.
Burrow Bird (B) - In contrast the Burrow Bird’s evolution did not specialize in maneuverability. Instead they are slow-moving belly-crawlers, much like modern day moles, and depend on digging burrows to escape predators. Their phalanges end in sharp protrusions which help them excavate ground effectively.
