I saw that ending a few minutes ago, and it's wasn't hard at all to see that Peach's concerned face was getting filled with pressure as the flowers kept on shoving, and thus she acted the way she did, and despite me being a MarioxPeach fan myself, I can to a point understand why she acted that way!
Just in real life, pressure makes people act and do the strangest of things, and it usually makes them act out of their characters. After all, it can turn a timid girl to slightly naughtier one for a minute or two. Heck, I act kind of crazy when I can't find my keys, or wallet, or whatever, and that scenario has repeated on me quite the number of times, just like any person would!
And personally, I can tell that Peach still loves Mario, yet she still wanted to be fair to Bowser, in order to prevent her decision of causing more war! And Mario, to a degree, could also have handed that situation better, rather than applying more pressure, because of his rivalry with Bowser. That was definitely the wrong route to go there.
Sure, that ending was a overall mess, and a minor setback to MarioxPeach, but contrary to what you believe, it didn't KILL the pairing! It hasn't even hampered its progress that much! Why? Because the past has spoken! There are the Super Mario World ending, the Super Mario 64 ending, the Super Princess Peach ending, the Super Mario 3D Land and the New Super Mario Bros. Wii ending, and they all the same answer - Peach's feelings were devoted to Mario, and they still are, but she can't really express her true feelings if she gets overburdened by various things, now can't she?
The point is, MarioxPeach has their history, which unfortunately for you, I can't see with MarioxMeggy at all. But hey, that's from MY perspective, after all!
