Description Tales From Earthsea Β© Ursula K. Le Guin and Studio Ghibli.

The DVD of Tales From Earthsea has finally come out here in the UK so of course I watched it that very day. I'd read that it wasn't great but I wanted to check myself. Sure, it doesn't compare to the books by Ursula K. Le Guin but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd managed to get my hands on the OST, by Tamiya Terashima, some time ago and it was great to finally have some video to go with all the tracks I loved so much.

I don't know how I managed to forget just how much I'd loved Ged and Tenar in the books. Sure, Arren and Therru were cute and all in the movie, but I cared much more about the adults. The (crappy) title refers to the part of Tenar's past that is only hinted at in the movie, when she talks about leaving the Tombs of Atuan and says that he "led [her] into the light". Gah, I need to read the books again.

Before I (finally) shut up, here, have my favouritefavouritefavourite track from the OST: [link] (you don't want to know how many times I played it while working on this)

Hmm, I don't remember having read that, and I thought I'd read everything to do with Earthsea… Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks! It is a good movie even if it's not a faithful adaptation. I should watch it again.

I haven't read the books so I can't compare it.

Le Guin said she wasn't involved in the making of the movie (not seeing script and what not) so it might've been Gibli's decision on which to do. Yes, the first book would've been the best.

Ah yes, I remember reading that she hadn't been involved.

Well, no movies can really compare to book. Not saying it's a bad movie Two complaints Le Guin had were that 1) There are more dark skin people in her stories than light skins yet the movie presented the opposite. 2) She said her stories don't enjoy condemning people with death even for villains. Another taboo violated in the movie. I think people might've judged the director too harshly or perhaps they were hoping he'd exhibit a legendary start like his father did. Not a fair expectation. Given the depth of Le Guin's books, I think it's unrealistic to want the audience to learn all about it within one movie. Another restriction.

Gibli's character designs have always been very impressive, especially their adults. Ged looked very wise and patient and fatherly. Tenar you could see the maturity that came with her age but at the same time the witty girl she once was. Ged's design went through many changes (as described in their graphic books), I think this version is very good.

You're absolutely, it's not a bad movie at all but it was a HUGE undertaking and so much just had to be lost. After having finally re-read the entire series, I really wish they'd decided to try A Wizard of Earthsea instead (but that could be because I love Ged so very much )

Thanks a lot!

Actually, I'm reading the books again and Tenar is supposed to have dark hair. Ged, on the other hand, definitely has dark skin and hair…

Mm! I've been looking for that series for, like, ever. I probably enjoyed the movie so much because I've not read the book yet. OxO They really didn't go into a terrible amount of detail in the movie, likely for continuity's sake.

But! Much like you, Arren and Therru were kind of a cute distraction from the real couple: Tenar and Ged. They are adorable!! OAO

Yes, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it even more if I hadn't known the books. But I'm getting good at treating adaptations as "same story but not really". You should try to get your hands on them; they're definitely worth it. Especially if you liked Ged and Tenar in the movie.

I saw Earthsea art and damn near died of glee...then read that it was from a movie. Still, it's absolutely amazing to see these characters drawn! Ged was one of my first and greatest love, characters-wise.

Yes, it's fanart from the Studio Ghibli movie, which is really nothing compared to the book. And that reminds me that I have to read it again!

Fontenar In reply to Mangsney [2008-10-01 07:54:34 +0000 UTC]

I hadn't heard about the movie until I saw this...evidently, it's not due to be released in the States til next year, and I don't keep up on movies too well to begin with.

So I read in the comments...kinda mixed feelings, really. The Earthsea books are beautiful, and the previous attempt to adapt them to film was godawful.

Yesss. Do it.

Mangsney In reply to Fontenar [2008-10-01 09:10:25 +0000 UTC]

It's something to do with copyrights for the name still being held until next year or something, isn't it? Well like I said, the movie doesn't compare to the books and they changed and mixed so many things, but I still think it's nice.

I actually started reading them again but hit a bit of a dry spell when I got towards the end of the 1st book. That happened the first time I read them as well so I know I have to go back and it'll get better. I really want to read The Tombs of Atuan again

I highly recommend the quartet if you can get your hands on it because there is so much about Ged that the movie doesn't even mention. There's a good reason why he is so humble and doesn't use magic unnecessarily (I love characters who screw up, pay for it and learn from their mistakes)

Apparently, there's a problem with some network owning the trademark/copyright until 2009 in the US...

Why are you smacking Disney...?

I recognised them about two seconds after I saw the small image.
Only ever read the collection of short stories and I've never watched it, even though it's been out for a couple of months over here, so unless it's that weird farming story, I don't get the reference.
