Before I say anything else, I just want to point this out... I'm not one of those people who hates on all the new Pokemon designs and says everything but Gen 1 sucks. I play all the games, and have favourite pokeymans from each generation. I even like garbodor ('nuff said, really...) cuz I think it's hilarious. Just wanted to point that out before I give my opinion on Mewtwo's new forme and get labelled a hater.I'm not exactly... Thrilled with it, to say the least. I wasn't sure about it initially, then when it was speculated to be a seperate Pokemon I didn't dislike it AS much. But now of course it's officially supposed to be Mewtwo so... Yeah. I wish they hadn't gone there. The new design itself isn't BAD and I would've been cool with it as a new Pokemon, but I personally don't think it suits Mewtwo's character; Tall, powerful, and forboding... The new forme seems too rounded and cute-ish. The other thing that bugs me is that this new forme (I may well be wrong) seems to be being sold almost as his true form or something. Which kinda sounds like they're saying the Mewtwo we know and love wasn't the real thing this whole time. And I really don't want this to be the case... I hope I am very wrong here!
As for this picture itself... While I think that the head tail design Game Freak went with is technically more unusual and creative, my love of creatures with long, powerful tails (that are situated in their proper location) causes me to not like the design as much as I would do if it... had a tail in the normal place. So I kinda just drew this to see what that would look like. I'm sure the operation didn't hurt (much).

New Mewtwo is an insult on basically every level.
The design alone is highly questionable and actually become highly insulting when you know Mewtwo's background as a character design ; the original Mewtwo is a double reference not just to Giygas's original form from Mother 1 but also to the antagonist of Pulse Man, a game by GameFreaks that predate PokΓ©mon. Mewtwo's design is a homage to Nintendo's history and GameFreaks's own.
To change it to NOT!Buu is... well, I don't want to trigger DeviantArt's word filters (if any) or get the DeviantArt mods to gaze in my direction.
This get even worse when you take into account the character ; new Mewtwo is a shallow character, deeply stupid, with none of the original's power, charisma, or intellect. She is arrogant, has a much more predictable character arc, has none of the philosophical depth of the original, and is seriously underwhelming (she get one-shotted by a common semi-Legendary. Not even a Elite/Champion-level one, just one by a normal Trainer. While she is in Mega Form. The original had greater feats of power during his training montage).
And the worst part about it all? When the devs who made the new Mewtwo were asked what they'd think of old fans not liking the new design and background, their reply was: "If you're old enough to remember the original, what are you doing watching PokΓ©mon movies?"
I think this explains quite nicely the mentality (and effort) that was put into the new design.
As for the pic itself...
Funny how just the act of actually putting New Mewtwo's tail on, you know, her behind instead of her head instantly make the design less terrible. Like the artist, I don't dislike new designs just because they're new ; I actually dig the new Legendaries' design, for example. But seriously, New Mewtwo is ugly in all the wrong ways.

I've gotten used to this new form as a mega, but still feel that, on the whole, neither of Mewtwo's megas do his character justice.

Yes, they actually said that.
And yes, Buutwo is underwhelming in all forms. The funny thing was that the original was stronger by such a ridiculous margin it's hilarous without the need for silly transformations (Mewtwo is one of three PokΓ©mon who are planet busters, capable of destroying the entire setting with one move if they go all out).
But even more than power, it's the character ; Buutwo is a stereotypical 'PokΓ©mon good humans bad' idiot, the very type that Mewtwo actually lambsted as being fools. While the original Mewtwo was insightful (if harsh) about the problems of the setting and how the PokΓ©mon Trainer paradigm needed to go, Buutwo incorrectly assume that it's just humans who are at fault and that they're all evil.
She's also insanely arrogant and prideful ; contrast with the original Mewtwo, who was capable of admitting when he's wrong and thus, adjust his plans and opinions accordingly. And who was not only justified in his belief of his power but also didn't feel the need to constantly rub it into everyone's face (he only really does it to taunt opponents as part of his plans and even then, it's to goad Trainers into doing mistakes by appealing at their pride rather than actual gloating).

I think the picture is great and very clever first off, well done! And I completely agree with you. To put it bluntly, mewtwo went from my favorite, badass pokemon that envoked a sense of strength and power to a cutesy bobble-headed version of the pokemon I once loved. IMO, nestalgia aside, they dropped the ball with the new design because it took away the strong, mysterious prescence the character once had. Like you stated above, to me it feels like a totally different pokemon. Well that's enough ranting out of me lol. Again, great picture and very clever.

I think you summed it up perfectly when you said the new design "took away the strong, mysterious prescence the character once had".
I have to say, now it's revealed to be a Mega evo of mewtwo, I don't think it looks more 'mega' than the original, but at least it's only temporary! I do find the design quite interesting though so I still want to try it out on the games.

Oh yeah pokemon takes me back to my childhood, i will always love it. But i just wish they made it a seperate pokemon because like you said it still looks cool. It could have been mew, mewtwo, and some other pokemon like them and they could have been a sick trio.

I love the idea of a tail-head,and the horns look like a halo which is lovely, but I wish it were actually a new pokemon :c They also could at least have made the head-tail look less like a tail. I personally redesigned it with a more ribbon looking thing instead...

My thoughts are in the same boat as yours. I was fine with the idea of it being a separate Pokemon, but now that it's official that this 'NewMew' is a new form...eh. I do like its design and all, but the fact this is a new form kinda underwhelms it in a way.

I agree with your sentiments. It's ok as maybe a separate pokemon, but as mewtwo, and almost like a replacement to mewtwo, no. And also why would he need to become this new form to stop genesect? as if his brain isnt strong enough to stop it mid flight and crush it into oblivion like it has been in every other appearance. Looking at this picture you realize just how little they altered it, its butt went on its head and it's wearing a tiara to try and cover it up. Also it stubbed its fingers and toes. ALL OF THEM.

Yeah I tried picturing Mewtwo looking like this in the first movie, and I don't think it would have been very easy to take it seriously....
I wonder if this thing will necessarily be any stronger, but if they're gonna emphasise a different aspect of it? Like, Mewtwo's going all Pinocchio on us and is gonna morph into this thing, shouting "I'ma real Pokemoooooon!"

Mewtwo's one of my favorite Gen. 1 Pokemon, but now that I know this Pokemon's supposed to be a new form for Mewtwo, I'm a little disappointed. Still, it's not bad character design.

The digits kinda remind me of monkey hands and feet.
I think it would've been a lot cooler if it were a monkey given Mew DNA injections or something. It would fit the genetics theme perfectly. After all, animal testing can cause unusual defects...it could explain why the tail went to its head.
