Yet another example of Sumi. This is very close to how the manga will look. It is 98% traditional art and 2% computer... just enough to make it look really cool.The background is very much in the style of sumi-e, and the forground is quite a bit more detailed. This is an example of how I would combine detailed personalized with traditional techniques... sort of. So after seeing these three pics, what do you think.
btw, if you like this style, this pic may actually become a pic in the manga at some point, because there is a character I developed a long time ago, from teh olden days when I still thought I had to write the whole novel out instead of draw it. XD That character is always accompanied by a mysterious wolf. Donno how important a role she will have, but I feel that I have to include her some how.

just a side note: in my account, all my fantasy art is from the same story I am working on turning into a manga now. I had been planning on writing a novel for sooooo long... but the idea of making a graphic novel appeals to me much more. That is why some parts of this story seem so well developed. They are. XD Other parts are not so well developed though. XD

Yay. Now I just need to practice a whole bunch with the styles, drawing the characters and the scenery as much as possible so that it looks both professional and unique to me when I create the manga it self. I was reallyworried that this wouldn't look right.

I think the wolf looks like a stone statue in this picture.. so it looks cool, but I do not know if you wanted this effect?

a stone statue? That is kinda cool. Not after that effect, but hey, I'm not complaining. For the character art, and the wolf would be a character, I do less detail with the sumi and just use contour lines froma normal pen to add detail to get around that. Now I'm convinced I'm sticking with this plan, i don't want all my characters to look like statues... though that might be interesting. XD Thanx for the thoughtful critiques.

I think the effect is created mostly by the somewhat striped structure of fur. It reminds me of a few minerals..

I see. You know when I looked at it, I could see where yougot the idea from. XD Any mineral in particular? I might actually use the idea of having a howling wolf statue in the forest some how... it is a rather striking image.

Travertine is a nice stone with interesting structure and is used in some monuments here. But it is attacked by acid rain and exhaust fumes, so those monuments look less than pretty in the cities nowadays.

Oh, yeah, now I know what you are talking about, I've seen pics of the eaten up monuments and learing about all that a while back. ^__^ Now that you mention it, really, you're right, the wolf does look like it is made of the stuff... I guess as long as there is no acid rain in that world... XD

If this is going to be the style you draw backgrounds in the manga, I'm really glad you chose this style 
It emphasizes the character but doesn't leave the background without attention.
