As far as I know they can control the rudder, but in some models, if pressed both at the same time, they act as a brake.
(Saw it in an episode of Charlie's Angels, and read about it as a cause of the crash of a russian plane)

have you seen the episode of "Charlies Angels" where Kate Jackson was hypnotized and she drove her Mustang Cobra along a canyon road with another Angel ( I forgot who, it's been 20 years since I saw it). Well Kate was driving too close to the side of the canyon and the other angel tried to convince her to snap out of it. Kate was wearing cute 70's wedge with painted nails.
