He figured out that if he can endure a few seconds of the kids trying to "wake him up" and if he remains "asleep", they eventually lose interested in him and go away.

Yep. Interesting that my Mom and I figured out his little game. We just waited until each wave of kids left, and he'd crack his eyes open just a bit to check to see if the coast was clear. And since my Mom and I weren't bothering him, he didn't feel the need to play opossum with us.
