S/He's gorgeous. The Green Mamba is such an adorable species of poisonous snake, and this is a wonderful shot of one.

Okay, so let's talk some "business" here. Is his cage well lighted? I'm assuming that you didn't use flash, correct? Did you use a macro lens? I just can't get images like this of snakes in cages.....

ManitouWolf In reply to Guard-of-the-Citadel [2011-04-23 05:02:17 +0000 UTC]
His enclosure is fairly well lit.
I actually did use a flash on this particular shot. Sometimes I would use the flash and sometimes not.
As for lens...no fancy macro glass for me at the moment. I used the lens that came with the camera when I bought it -- Nikkor 18 - 55 mm.
As for getting shots like this...I had the lens flush with the glass of his enclosure. I played around with various angles as he moved around, just seeing what worked and didn't work.

A well lit enclosure does help. It shines on his green skin so beautifully. And he must like you; he comes to you all the time (I looked through your gallery). At the recommendation of a fellow DA artist, I just purchased a rubberized lens hood which should allow my lens to seal flush with glass enclosures (like my meerkats) and eliminate flash and reflections. I can't wait to try it out and see how it works. It might be good for this also. My problem will be with the focus I think. I have a Tamron 25-300. I can't even find the smaller lens that originally came with the camera! I wish I could! I'd try it out! Thanks for the info; that does help me!

Yeah, I should get around to picking up a rubber lens hood. Right now, I just use my hand. *chuckles*
Good luck!

Apparently using your hand instead of the rubber lens hood works very well for you!!!

Is there any difference between the green mamba, and the black mamba other than color?
