Soo good! "textures" are amazing, shadows and colors are just plain magical... I will suffice with saying the lighting is perfect, its mostly a photographic term but it works on this picture as well

Oo...Wow, the detail on this is just superb. It's so deceptively simple at first sight... Then you look closer and BAM. In particular, I like the mascara and the wrinkles in the clothing. They're so subtle yet so realistic.

This is a truely fabulous piece.....I had tried to do something similar but the hair never really came out right. I wanted to know what program you used and how you got the hair to still fade and have blured edges. Same for teh face...did you use gradient messhing at all or is this all just payer upon layer of solid shapes with opacity played with? If you'd prefer, you coudl always note me with your answers. I just really want to be able to make a nice portrait in Illustrator or even in Photoshop...

I use both - Photoshop and Illustrator.
I don'u use g-mesh tool, only pen tool. These are paths filled with colors with various opaticies (like the whole face, t-shirt, hair base) or gradients (the jacket and beckground).
The hair I do in PS (it's easier for me). Each string is a path stroked with color - lighter and thinner on top and darker and thicker under.
I don't use blur filter or any other.
That's it I guess.
