Description Hello Everyone!Hope you are doing well.

I started this concept few months ago and recently decided to finalize it so I could share with you.It was totally a random composition that kept evolving as I was progressing by adding several spontaneous elements. As base,I created it the traditional way by blocking shapes throughout the composition. Then,I used a lot of photo images-as can be seen, and some 3D elements as well, using Poser.Mixed everything together and done some hand drawn touches in the end. Can't remember exactly how long it got me to complete it but certainly spent many hours.Software used: Photoshop and Poser.
hope you like it!

Thank you again for your support!

Hello Mlappas! How much do you charge for your work? Their arts have different values? How much are they? I would like to use as the cover of a book. I await your reply. Thank you

Nice description of the method used, and even the photo elements look painted anyway A lot of concept artists do that to save time (since really a concept is just showing an idea, it doesn't have to be a fully-fledged artwork all done the manual way I guess) It's something I've considered giving a try. Probably not until I refine my work without photo's or renders first

ManthosLappas In reply to Chromattix [2011-03-07 19:52:53 +0000 UTC]

Matthew,Hello my friend.Thank you!when it comes to such descriptions is not my strongest point but I try make things simple enough to understood.
Although I used many photo elements,I still didnt wanted to look fake or like a collage of pictures around. So,I drawn the base traditionally and after placing all the photos around, having edit them (lights, transformation shapes etc)then,I painted some small details on top of all elements included in the composition.

And yes,is exactly as you described it about concept art,As a concept artist myself,I soon found out that incorporating all those elements together creates an interesting result visually by using a method that is really quicker than any other. After working for a year and so in an upcoming tv series,I realized how fast the industry goes and being at such bizz requires you find all the possible ways to show your ideas fast and efficiently. So,started studying more about mixed techinques and I really have to say that my long years experience in traditional painting helped me much in this process.Still,LOTS to learn of course,it never ends and thats the magic!
I think you should really try this technique..you do have the eye for composition, you have such amazing knowledge in 3d and Im sure you can do impressive things.Im glad you liked my work,I havent been often here at all anymore,a busy life, both professionally and personal issues keeps me away.
But have to say, always I appreciate your support guys!

Yikes, it does sound really full-on even when working fast I can't imagine doing more than two full-colour artworks a day I suppose that's what drawing little thumbnails are for (I'm guilty of never doing that for my own work since my first idea is always the best anyway though I do it for commissions ) Getting the right stocks would be time consuming I bet, especially in regards to buildings which can really reveal perspective issues if the building photo angle is different to the artwork in mind, Guess you just gotta know how to transform it right for that

ManthosLappas In reply to Chromattix [2011-04-08 21:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Well,I have been working under those kind of tight deadlines for 10 years in my job and I learned to force my self being more productive,I would say that anyone of us could do it if he/she really pushes it.Ofcourse to be honest,I do prefer taking my time to create more detailed and quality works than doing too many in a single day just to deliver.Sadly, this has an impact in the result and this happens even to the greatest professionals out there. Not all of them, but in a majority I believe and see so.

Regarding the photo transformations, true.Anything you mentioned above is like that,it takes some time and effort to bring specific photo elements to the desired proportions.I usually transform them into a quite close result to the one I need and from there going over and painting to adjust it.I still love the process though, unlocks new possibilities and enriches the result, especially when it comes to concept art pieces or mood artworks, etc.
Sorry for the late response man, being swarmed with tasks.Always nice talk with you!

the details! dude they're amazing! i really like how you drew every little raindrop, wire and screw ^^i also really like the colorwork and it really seems as if the machine in front of the drawing is in actually pain, i love how you'd captured that ^^ so you did AWESOME work here sir! and well done

(what is poser?)

Cindy,Hello! Thank you very much dear!Yes,I intendedly wanted all those emotions to show there, glad it worked.
Poser is a 3D software where you can import custom 3d elements place them together, and manipulate/edit them. Its very useful as you can place figures and edit their poses/facial expressions and make a template for a paintings base or even just for reference. Its really cool and by using 3d objects definitely takes the concept to a new direction.
I appreciate the nice words!

although im not familiar with poser, but i am simply loving this final work. the composition, the feeling of doom, even on a droid level is so shocking. the colors are mind-numbing and everything. every single thing is worth going over. even if it took many months, this was very much worth it! im in pure awe.

ManthosLappas In reply to hotpinkscorpion [2011-03-07 19:41:24 +0000 UTC]

Saher,Thank you so much once again,my dear friend.Im really glad you like it,it was more of an experiment.Dealing more with the same techniques can bring improvements.I have been messing with Poser for a while, its a helpful software to block down some elements either as reference or base for the creations.I didnt want to overdo it with 3d so just use a single human render that I later manipulated in Ps and placed in the composition.
I still want to keep it in a level that wont look too "dead" without emotions.
I always appreciate your support!
