CHAPTER 47: RESTING PLACE

“You shouldn’t have held back.” Kadem said as she closed the door of Gabrielle’s chamber, helping the dark woman to her bed. “Plum would have appreciated a candid tear or two.”

Gabrielle glared at the silver witch in response, unappreciative of the comment. The hybrid had made a tremendous effort to keep her dignity as she excused herself away from the eyes of the children, away from her student’s caring embrace. “She needs the image of her mighty master more than she needs a dying mutant.” Gabrielle settled on the pillows, “Still… when push comes to shove we’re all the same… pitiful creatures trembling in front of the void, seeking warmth, wishing for more time. I really don’t want Malia’s words to become a lie… I want to let her save me. If only I had a little longer…”

Kadem put her arms around Gabrielle, staunchly and tenderly, “I’m sorry I didn’t do more for you. If I had snapped out of it when you first showed up, maybe… Maybe by now I could have-”

“Don’t apologize, silver child.” Gabrielle’s voice was a hoarse whisper, “There’s a reason those kids could wake you up when I couldn’t. Those who pity themselves can’t spare empathy for others… they can’t reach them. I know that now. Next time… Next time I’ll try to realize it sooner.”

A long silence enveloped them, undisturbed by Gabrielle’s restrained tears. Kadem didn’t move. She couldn’t. She wouldn’t.

“…Go back to the children, witch.” Gabrielle spoke again, “I’ll sleep for a bit. I’m tired. Very tired.”

Kadem nodded, her hands lingering on Gabrielle’s shoulders as she stood up, and she left the dark woman in the warm darkness of the blankets.

The quiet had always been Gabrielle’s loyal ally; even now, despite everything, that hadn’t changed. Thus, she could finally rest.
