Description This was my entry for a competition in Norway, where the challenge was to draw the cover of the Norwegian edition of George R. R. Martin's book "A Game of Thrones", from the series "A Song of Ice and Fire". I wasn't the lucky winner, but I had a lot of fun painting this picture, and I also love the book.

I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to paint it, so I think I'll work a little more on it as soon as I have time.

The picture shows young Jon Snow, riding around on the southern side of the Wall, together with his direwolf Ghost.

Medium: Photoshop CS5
Time spent: About 30 hours, I think.
Date: February 28, 2011
References: I used a reference for the wolf's head.

Tusen takk! Jeg tegnet dette etter å ha lest første boken, før første sesong kom ut, så det ligner ikke på Jon fra serien Men jeg elsker både bøkene og TV-serien, det skal være sikkert!

Wow, well thank you! There were many great entries in the contest, and I didn't expect to win anything in the first place I may give Daenerys a try sometime, though it wouldn't be quite the same after the TV series is here and all. But we'll see!

That's interesting because it feels to me like this painting has come from the depth of your imagination rather than from... a collection of visual references and pictures that already exist! o/

I might be wrong about this, but it helps me see that what I tend to do is to mix things I like togetkher, which ends up being more shallow, less profound than if it was a vision of my mind like I think you've done with this painting
Maybe I've been falling into a lazy habit of using too much visual reference instead of cultivating my imagination... I see that now thanks to your painting. Thank you for your art!

I do indeed draw mostly from imagination - too much, actually. At least that is what the pros say: if you only draw from imagination, the result won't be as good as it could be. And I certainly understand them, because I am far from able to draw things perfectly from my imagination. It's just that, well, I like drawing from imagination! That way I can make things just the way I want, and I can let my imagination run free. But I'm working on getting better at using references, because I realize that they are essential if I want to take my artwork to the next level

I think that if we are able to combine references and imagination, then our artwork will be at its best. So I guess we both have something to work on then!

I thought about painting Ghost's nose pink-ish, but I couldn't really remember reading it in the books. I looked at some other fanart from people who know the books far better than me, and it seemed like most of them gave Ghost a black nose. A pink one would probably be more correct, though Thank you for telling me! I'm glad you like the picture ^^

Haha, it is indeed a quite similar til Daes Dae'mar It's all about getting power, and keeping it. Of course, the series also has a lot of other exciting stuff that will keep your eyes nailed to the pages

Har du lest A Song of Ice and Fire ?
Det er den absolutt beste bokserien jeg noen gang har lest, uavhengig av sjanger!

Treet bak «Ghost» virker litt forstrekt, men ellers flott arbeid. Skyggeleggingen på hesten er spesielt godt gjennomført!

HBO lager en TV-serie basert på Game of Thrones , om du ikke var klar over det. Premiere 17 april

Det er vel mer riktig å si at jeg holder på å lese den, ettersom jeg fremdeles har noen kapitler igjen av Game of Thrones Men du har absolutt rett i at det er en fantastisk bra serie, for den er syyykt spennende! Er mange som dør da, men det er vel ikke annet å forvente

Og takk skal du ha! Jeg er latterlig dårlig på bakgrunner, så jeg stresset en del med treet bak Ghost (i tillegg til at tidsfristen nærmet seg med stormskritt - det er det jeg får for å vente med å begynne på bidraget til helgen før deadline!). Men takk for at du sier fra, det gjør meg mer innstilt på å gjøre ting bedre i fremtiden ^^

Og jepp, jeg vet godt om TV-serien, og jeg gleder meg skikkelig til å se den! Kommer den allerede i april, altså? Jøss, jeg trodde ikke det var før i juni en gang. Dette var jo enda bedre!

Very nice! I really like the composition and feeling in it! Also, love the books! I just keep forgetting Jon's got dark hair... haha! I got it into my head at the beginning somehow that he was light haired and "matching" his wolf... later I realized he wasn't but still thinks of him that way! *lol*

Thank you! Haha, I've got the same problem with a few characters in other books It's sooo hard to imagine them differently! If the author mentions their hair colour later in the books, I sometimes deliberately change the letters in my head, so that they are true to my visions
