STORY

Aithne trotted Taffy up the centre of the ring slowly, letting him prance his way towards the middle. He halted with ease, standing square as she bowed to the judges and then gathered up her reins. The music burst out into the air and she nudged Taffy forwards into their routine, the slow drum filling her veins and Taffy's hooves moving in time.

Show me that you're human,

Like a thief, in the light,

As the music came to an end, they halted in the middle once more, Aithne breathing heavily. So she hadn't fallen off and Taffy hadn't spooked or set fire to anything. She guessed she could thank God for small mercies. She bowed once more to the judges before dropping Taffy's reins and leaning forwards to hug his neck and pet him vigorously as he started to make his way out of the ring to the sound of rippling applause. They were okay. She could have done a lot worse. She was pleased with her performance and that was all that counted.

She took Taffy off to cool down and was soon joined by the rest of the team as they rushed down from the stands to congratulate her. They didn't care if she was going to win or not. She had done a good job, they had enjoyed it, and they could only sing her praises as she slid down from Taffy's back and was pulled straight into a hug from Adam.

“I'll rub him down and check him,” Lee said to her as he took Taffy's reins. She nodded at him and rested an arm around Adam's waist, watching as Lee walked away with Taffy and Aisha. The pair looked close, closer than she had seen them for a while. She turned her head to look up at Adam and poked him lightly.

“Is something going on with those two again?” she asked under her breath.

“I have no idea,” he muttered, “they've been very touchy feely today, though.” Aithne snorted gently and started to walk with him after her horse. Izzy had Aiden on her shoulders and tagged along behind them.

Now all they had to do was hope the show jumping rounds were safe and clean, and that was classed as a success for Firelight.
