Late one night, lying in bed, a young woman silently pondered a haunting question in her soft heart…

“I wish…?”

For once in her life, there was no answer.  She could not fill in the blank with any precious hopes.  She could not reply with dazzling aspirations any quicker than she could reply with earnest dreams.  The young woman simply didn’t know.

What do you wish for?  When you are alone, and truly yourself, when no one else is around to read your eyes or judge your actions…when you are left in dark solitude…what do you wish for?

Do you wish for riches, wisdom, and looks?  How about fame and glory?  Is your heart’s desire to seek out another heart to share eternity with?  Is there someone in this world you’d love to please?

What do you wish for?

Such things raced through the woman’s mind, but none were quite fitting.  She was lost.
Overwhelmed with confusion.

Maybe she couldn’t hear her own heart, because it was drowned out by all her worries and troubles…

What do you wish for?

Her mind spinning once more, the lady thought as hard as she could.  Did she want to be loved?  Did she wish for a long life?  How about a family-a nice, big, happy, wonderful family?  Success at work?  A name that will linger on this earth, long after her death?

The young woman paused for a moment…

Her eyes shut, releasing one tear to fall onto your lap, smearing the ink on the pages below…

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
       and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
       and he will make your paths straight.

She smiled…closed the book…and muttered her answer at last.

“I wish.”
