Ok. So in my Spanish clases last year, our teachers told us a grammar rule, and when I started using it, someone, (English speaking, but of course thinking they are better than me because they find me an idiot), said I was wrong and later went on to say a bunch of mean things about the event.
So any way. Here's the deal, which I want to solve once and for all.
I know that 'que' means what and 'como' means how. (Sorry if through out this I don't accent correctly, my computer doesn't do that).
But our teachers told us that if you want to ask what, the polite way to do it is to say 'como', not 'que'. I asked if this applies to even just talking to friends, and my teacher said yes, that in Spanish speaking countries, they will usually say 'como', because 'que' was the equivalent of a rude American with a nasty face and annoyed voice saying 'what', or of someone snapping and saying 'what'.
So, which is it?

Well i'm glad to say that u are right. and so is your teacher kuddos to her, most ppl never bother with details like this.
Yes to ask what politely u do say como.
Like when you don't undrstand what someone said, or are just dumnfounded by something but u dont wanna sound rude.
Que is seen as rude sometimes but it also depends alot on the way you say it (as in the tone u give it)
So whom ever made fun of you, i make fun of them in return for being to plain ignorant about the wonderfull little details that make spanish to intricate.

Yea, the conversation went like this.
(Two employees at a restaurant were talking, and one kept screaming 'que' at the guy and laughing)
Me (muttering): It's 'como' not 'que...
Her (snapping): 'Que' is what in Spanish, 'como' is how!
Me: Yes, but when asking what, it is rude to say 'que', and polite to say 'como'.
Her (annoyed and rolling eyes): They are coworkers and friends, they don't have to be polite to each other.
Me: *silent* (Knowing it's safer on my behalf to let her believe she's right than to prove her wrong and anger her more so).
Yea...
Later she noted...
"I only snapped ONCE over her stupid spanish grammar which sucks almost as bad as her English"
^Funny note^...she didn't capitalize Spanish, which is incorrect English grammar haha.
