Description They always told me that my high school years would be the best of my life.  Maybe they really meant to say, the most memorable?  Because best, doesn't quite fit my memory of these past few tedious years.

Yet now, here I stand, with thirteen years behind me, safely put to rest in my pocket like an embarrassing photo album in a dark corner of a webbed attic...thirteen years.

How can such times be measured and accounted for?  The vast number of assignments, the heaps of papers, the many times told no, or many more when forced to say yes?  Do we recall the tired faces of underpaid advisors, or the number of disappointed fingers parading in front of our faces?  Do we remember the unified mockery of preps, the undying shame of Goths, or the silent loneliness of the geeks and dweebs?

Sometimes, high school seemed like a land mine of martyrs and slaves.  Teen mothers clasping hands through the hallways as the dainty Christian girls whisper of their atrocities.  Meanwhile, a child humbles a tortured Muslim and special needs child, protecting each from the flying spit, jests, and fists of peers.  The emos shrink into their corners, side by side with potheads, using cuts and puffs as an escape from an unwanted life.

Will these alone be our memories?  Is it such things that our colored gowns and caps resemble?

Yes.

And HECK NO!

Our gowns are for the lessons hard earned.  Our gowns are for the tears of laughter we had.  Our gowns are for the tolling bells, claiming our daily processions.  Our gowns are for the enemies we loved.  Our gowns are for the friends who cared enough to stay when our families weren't quite enough.

And to top it off, above all, the cap upon our heads held high, is for the families who were more than enough.  Our caps are for the futures we hold tight in hand.  Our caps are for the lives we've achieved.  Our caps are for the love we've found.  Our caps are for the passion, instilled more and more into us each blessed day of the past beautiful, hard, troublesome, tarrying, life-changing, revolutionizing, painful, tempestuous, and memorable, thirteen years...

So stick a fork in us, because we are DONE!

I was very confused at first... I thought you meant you were thirteen years old when you graduated, not having been through thirteen years of school. xD It wasn't until the end that I figured out what you meant.

It's an excellent depiction of high school life, though. Very accurate, and well-written!

Ha thanks. Sorry about the confusion. Yea, I meant 13 years from kindergarden to senior year...not including the two years of preschool.

Thanks a lot though!

*faves* This really speaks to me, and your writing is perfect. It makes me think that maybe going to highschool next year (instead of continuing homeschooling) might not be as horrible as I thought, and when it's over and done with, I'll be able to say that I had all those different experiences. Thank you!

Aw, you are far too kind.

High school is worth it. I've known and been related to many a homeschooled child, and while they get the same or better level of school smarts at home, high school offers education of a different sense. Very different. There are pieces of life only known to those who walk through brick hallways and sit in cold stone desks...

I graduated in '06 and that is the best perspective I have seen yet! ^^

Oh wow, thank you so much! That means more than any writing could express...hearing such things makes me want to just get back in the sack and write some more!

Congrats on your achievements, and thank you for congratulating mine.

Thanks...I've had the pleasure and privledge of many different "crowds" letting me into their life and how it is like, and I've been on many sides of the platform when it comes to highschool. Thus, I am able to show my perspective while also giving the perspective of many.
