Description
I remember some people asking for this a long time ago~ So here you have! This is how I color optics, step by step, all steps separated in different layers. What I do is basically:
1. Start with flat colors.
2. New layer on "Multiply" mode. Add a little shading for depth.
3. New layer on "Normal" mode. Add a lighter color in part of the non-shaded areas.
4. New layer on "Luminosity" mode. Using the same color of the flats, add some glow in the inner optic.
5. New layer on "Luminosity" mode. Add a lighter color (almost white) in the center of the highlighted areas.
6. New layer on "Normal" mode over the lineart layer. Using the airbrush and the same color of the flats, smudge the inner and outer lines of the optics.
7. New layer on "Luminosity" mode. With the same color of the flats, add some glow and the light that reflects around the optic.
8. New layer on "Luminosity" mode. Add just a little of white glow in a small area of the inner optic.
I strongly suggest playing around with layers, colors and glow until you're satisfied with the result! That's how I learned to do it. Feel free to ask me if you have any doubts and want to know more! I'm always glad to help.
Hope this is helpful! Now go have fun coloring

Here's a question for you then. How would you get two different colored optics (one gold one silver) to appear properly behind a pale gold visor translucent enough to see them through it? My friend sketched a character headshot for me but had some trouble in that regard -- the silver one wound up washed out and not looking as silver as it should have. Is there any way to get that to work at all?
For clarity, she uses Autodesk 2017 as her art program.

I have never really used Autodesk except for the 3D software, so I can't really know the way it works. But well- a coloured-transparent object right over another will always have an influence and change the perception of color of the ones beneath. So, the silver optic wouldn't (and realistically SHOULDN'T) look entirely silver when it's behind the gold visor. It's like putting one translucent paper over a different paper, with different color. The combination that happens because of its translucency WILL cause a color change, adding up the colors.
