Description
Front 3/4 view of my 1985 Suzuki Katana model. Drawn and rendered in Rhino3D, with a Faro laser scanarm used to gather the necessary data from the bike. The bodywork, tank and engine are polygon meshes. Everything else I've redrawn as nurbs models in Rhino from the polygon meshes brought in from the scanner. I've made a couple parts from this model so far and the accuracy is great. I just need to do som final detailing and dimension checking on the swingarm before I start fabricating it.Related content

i'm not usually fond of 80's bikes, but this is really awesome.

Thanks! And thanks for the fave. Had the real version out for a ride today.
Some day, I should do an updated rendering of this thing. Maybe do a side-by-side comparison with the real one.

hey, this is my dad's ol' motorbike!
I can see you modeled all the engines, salute to you man..
Did you customize this bike? because my dad's katana doesn't have any fairing, only the headlamp cover

It is modified quite a bit, but the bodywork is all original. Your dad's Katana must be the earlier, original version. Those had much more minimal bodywork. Actually, I really want one of the '82-'83 1100cc models. Really.

yup, I guess my dad's bike is a '84 katana

is this done for work or ur own pleasure? im learning rhino 3d at the moment and am hungry for as much knowledge about it as possible. what could you suggest as the best way to render my models, do i need a separate programe for rendering? rhinos rendering seems abit poor with pixelated shadows etc. thnx good work!

This is mostly done for pleasure I guess. I needed to design a new swingarm for my bike, so I digitized the frame and parts and 'built' it in Rhino. I'm still in the process of actually making the swingarm, but that's a long story.
Yeah, the renderer packaged with Rhino is basically useless. The shaded on-screen view is about as good, and in real-time. The next step up is their add-on Flamingo. That's what this is rendered in. Shortly after this, I picked up Maxwell Render and I'm still running the Rhino/Maxwell combo. I don't think Maxwell can be touched for pure image quality by anything short of the big stuff like Pixar's Renderman.
Every different renderer has its own learning curve. You have to get used to how the lights and material settings respond to changes and stuff like that. Rendering is really the same as shooting a picture in a studio. The same lighting rules apply. Especially in Maxwell.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more pointers, glad to help a fellow Rhino guy

Haha, probably 1.5 million. I'd have to check to be sure. Most of what I model is done in surfaces and solids instead of polygons. The software converts to polys in order to render it.
I could pretty easily make a mid-poly version of this if it'd work for your animation.

Haha, I got my train model up to about 5.5 million and my computer got pissed off and wouldn't render it any more. Had to optimize it a bit back down to around 2.7 million. It's still at least double what it'd be if you were modelling it in polygons instead of solids. It's like coding manually vs. using a wysiwyg editor.

u lost me on the "coding" part...
i think its way too much polys for such simple object.. could have done the same with under 100k

Awesome! The bike itself is amazing (i would kill for one of em ), but the model is very good as well. Props for using nurbs, they've always been a pain for me

umm.... it seems you put the label on backwards on the front.... otherwise, very nice

I retract my backwards statement... after seeing the photograph...
anyway, I saw your train WIP, can't wait to se the final render!

Really great.
I wonder how much time you took to complete the bike 3d all process.
