History: the TTR-1 Sudd was a joint effort by Koensayr Manufacturing and Incom Corporation to garner the lucrative military contracts being offered by the New Republic in the wake of its victory at Endor and in the subsequent years as they rapidly took Imperial territory and eventually the galactic capital of Coruscant. The design incorporated aspects of both the X-wing and Y-wing, two starfighters that were common in New Republic military service. The intention of creating a new starfighter that shared enough commonality with the two starfighters was to make maintenance and parts acquisition simpler and thereby increase the chances of adoption. The finished starfighter was the TTR-1 Sudd Escort Starfighter.

The principle behind the Sudd was very different from most Rebel Alliance and New Republic starfighters in that it was designed around a defensive rather than offensive role. Its heavy armament was accompanied by strong shields and a sturdy armored hull with engines that were powerful enough to enable the TTR-1 to maintain speed alongside its intended partners. Given the New Republic's reliance on assault starfighters and bombers during capital ship combat the joint design board of Koensayr and Incom designed the Sudd around this principle. They reasoned that by providing a heavily armored and armed starfighter to escort New Republic bombers and assault starfighters that they'd guarantee themselves a contract.

Unfortunately for Koensayr and Incom this strategy would prove unsuccessful as the New Republic showed no interest in the Sudd, leaving Koensayr and Incom out of luck on their intended financial windfall. The New Republic was pushing further towards standardization from the rather eclectic collection of starfighters which had served with the Rebel Alliance and the Sudd wasn't seen by New Republic High Command to fit into that equation. This would change in the aftermath of the Thrawn Campaign and Operation Shadow Hand. Republic losses following these two conflicts pushed the Combined Defense Forces of the New Republic to scramble for additional starfighters resulting in the adoption of designs such as the A-9 Vigilance among others to shore up starfighter losses and this scramble resulted in a reexamining of the TTR-1.

In the interim between the initial rejection of the TTR-1 and the New Republic's renewed interest in the design Incom and Koensayr had released the craft onto the open market and had achieved some limited success by marketing it to planetary defense forces, mercenary groups, and shipping companies. The Sudd was sold as a relatively inexpensive heavy starfighter that could escort convoys or protect static installations from pirates and raiders without breaking the bank. This coupled with the readily available parts and ease of maintenance saw the type in fairly widespread use throughout the galaxy. This meant that when the New Republic suddenly approached Incom and Koensayr for a new starfighter both companies were quick to pull up the TTR-1 as an immediately available option ready for rapid adoption.

While criticized by some for its simplicity and use of arguably outdated design philosophies the partial failure of the newer E-wing helped make the case that the Sudd would prove more than adequate. Several squadrons were stood up in rapid succession and attached to bomber wings throughout the New Republic fleet forces where they quickly proved their worth in escorting bomber and assault starfighters to their targets. This enabled the New Republic to hit back against the Imperial juggernaut during Operation Shadow Hand. However despite these successes the TTR-1 Sudd was always seen by New Republic High Command as a stopgap measure rather than a permanent fixture in the Combined Defense Forces.

This meant that once the crisis of the Emperor Reborn had passed and the issues with the E-wing were hammered out that orders for TTR-1s dried up rapidly and the focus became maintaining current inventories rather than acquiring new hulls. This coincided with other events such as the reforming of Incom as it unified with FreiTek, and the final retiring of the Y-wing in favor of the B-wing and later the K-wing meant that Incom no longer had a vested interest in maintaining New Republic sales of the TTR-1 Sudd. These two events meant that the two most appealing aspects of the Sudd in terms of the New Republic's use of the type no longer applied as the parts commonality with the Y-wing was no longer a factor and the TTR-1 was directly competing against Incom-Freitek's E-wing. This resulted in Incom-Freitek withdrawing their support for the Sudd program and leaving Koensayr alone to maintain manufacturing.

While some Combined Defense Forces squadrons maintained their TTR-1s the type became increasingly rare in New Republic service even with Koensayr and various proponents making the argument that the type served a vital role as a close-in escort for the new K-wing bombers. The TTR-1 performed this escort role admirably on multiple occasions including during the Darksaber incident and again during the Black Fleet Crisis. None of this service negated the fact that newer model starfighters were coming online and the older design of the Sudd was increasingly seen as superfluous and ultimately the type was withdrawn from frontline service. It continued to serve elsewhere in markets where the Y-wing still flourished, making an appealing companion to Koensayr's other major manufacturing success for customers seeking a more nimble craft with some parts commonality with their Y-wings.
