The TIE/Cr Condor was an advanced TIE design that came about as a direct result of the treachery of one of the Galactic Empire's Grand Admirals. Demetrius Zaarin had developed the TIE Experimental Project in secret as a part of his planned coup against Emperor Palpatine. While ultimately unsuccessful, the Grand Admiral's project was examined by Sienar Fleet Systems' TIE Mod Team for possible applications to Imperial starfighter development. Originally designated as the TIE/Ad x8, the design went through testing in the lead up to the Battle of Endor and showed promise as a heavy strike fighter.

Incorporating aspects of the TIE Advanced x1, TIE Interceptor, and the TIE Experimental Project, the TIE/Ad x8 would be put through flight testing and would receive the designation TIE/Cr Condor. The design incorporated the hull-form of the TIE Advanced x1, the inverted wing-form of the TIE Interceptor and weapons systems from all three of its progenitors. The result was a powerful cannon platform that was capable of engaging both starfighters and capital ships alike, backed up with a potent missile magazine. In addition to this, while shielding was limited it did incorporate the light shielding pioneered by the TIE Experimental Project, giving it a higher survivability than most standard Imperial starfighters.

Exact weapons load consisted of two light turbolaser cannons mounted outboard of the cockpit, four wingtip heavy blaster cannons, and two chin-mounted missile launchers capable of carrying twenty missiles. Coupled with a hyperdrive the TIE Condor was capable of independent strikes against heavy targets without the need for capital ship backup. The platform was also comparatively economical. While more expensive than the Empire's TIE/ln and TIE/IN starfighters, it was still cheaper than both the TIE Avenger and TIE Defender then in limited production. Sienar Fleet Systems hoped that the TIE Condor would be able to supplant Cygnus Spaceworks Xg-1 Star Wing as the Empire's principle long-range starfighter, something that neither the Avenger or Defender had achieved.

However the timing of the TIE Condor worked against it as no sooner had it been designed and developed than the Battle of Endor took place. The resulting defeat at the hands of the Rebel Alliance threw the Empire into disarray, curtailing procurement of even established TIE designs such as the TIE Interceptor which had originally been intended to fully replace the TIE Fighter. With the resulting chaos as the Empire's prolonged fall began, Sienar Fleet Systems was unable to secure even a limited production contract as it had with the TIE Avenger and Defender. Still hoping that the defeat at Endor was a fluke, SFS would fund their own limited production run of the TIE Condor and issue them to the Imperial Navy as a sign of faith in the Empire's ability to recover from the loss of the Emperor.

As with the Xg-1 Star Wing, the TIE Condor would rarely be deployed at full squadron strength with individual capital ships carrying anywhere from two to a half-dozen Condors to be used in a variety of roles. Those units that received the limited production of Condors liked the craft as it offered a distinct performance improvement over the Star Wing. It did lose some of the assault gunboat's versatility, but pilots felt this was made up for by the design's increased firepower. Despite its positive reception in the few units that received it, the steady decay of the Empire following Endor guaranteed that the TIE Condor would suffer the same fate as the majority of the advanced TIE designs.
