I haven't designed a new garment in a long time... not since leaving school I think. I only developed and refined the designs I've already got. This however, will probably be the first new design of mine for a while.It's a modular jacket, so the base garment is a short vest. Then you can attach sleeves, a collar, and a skirt, or short sleeves, or puffy sleeves or a tail or pockets etc. etc. etc. Right now I'm just working on the fit of the torso, and hopefully I may have time to finish it before this next winter is over so I can actually wear it.
I'm planning on having it properly tailored to fit. The first sleeves will be constructed with a bend in the elbow and will taper to the wrist so I will need the front half of the arm to open up. The skirt I want to make for it will be double breasted to match the top half and will function the same. It will also have pleats on the sides and back.
I think I'll probably wax it as well, to handle the wet winters of the NW.

This sounds neat.
You have a lot of cool clothing stuff. It makes me think, 'Ooo, I wanna design some cool clothing stuff like that,' but... when I draw people, their clothing ends up as plain tee-shirts and pocketless pants, so I'd imagine I'm terrible at clothing design. ^_^" But I kind of wish I'd tried making something cool when I had a home ec class several years ago... I slightly modified a pants pattern to give slightly wider legs, and then after making them, I was afraid to wear them, thinking they might fall apart on me. I find it neat how your stuff doesn't look like it's about to come undone any minute. ^_^"

Indeed, durability is definitely one of my points of focus. Yeah, before I went through design school, I had good ideas of what I wanted, but didn't know how to put them onto paper effectively or make patterns and actually manifest an idea.

How much work is it to make stuff? Last night I was thinking about how annoying it is that my hands kept getting cold (starting toward winter again), and how it'd be nice if I had something like socks on my hands, but not stupid looking. And I guess the modular jacket concept was on my mind, because I started thinking about how it'd be cool if I could make fingerless gloves out of a light, sock-like material, with attachable fingers and arm extensions (and probably attachable with something like string and loops, since things like buttons, snaps, or Velcro wouldn't be the best idea). Though, for a few months now I've also thought about trying to make attachable shears/linings for some curtains (by adding snaps), but I never can figure out how to do that. Every time I go to Wal-Mart, I can't find anyone who'd tell me what kind of fabric I'd use or where it would be.

Couldn't have asked a more vague question. It really all depends on what it is your making (a shirt is easier then a coat), what you're making it out of (cloth is easier then leather) and how your making it (quickly thrown together or taking time and paying attention to detail). For those curtains, you could get a narrow bit of webbing or twill tape and fasten it between the snap and fabric (so you don't have to do stitching) and then put the other end of the snap at the other end of the webbing and just have it long enough to loop around your curtain rod. Is Wal-Mart your only source of fabric? is there a Joanns close by? or even better, if you can find a fabric store that's part of a small chain, if any at all.

Not exactly sure what you're describing about webbing, but I've played with snaps before and they seem easy enough to sew on things. The webbing stuff might be better, though. It's mainly just not knowing what fabric to buy because I wanted to make something to attach to the back of curtains (to try keeping the sun from fading out the color of the curtains, but also to see if it could be something like shears, so that if you pull the curtains into tiebacks or holdbacks, the back could fall freely). I could probably try drawing what I mean if you'd want me to (I don't even know if it'd work if I tried making them).
Then, there's also actual curtains I'd like to buy, but I can't find anywhere that sells green curtains (at least a medium or darker green, and not a yellowish green), so I've wondered about making some, but that would be more complicated than the shear/liner thing. I thought maybe there's a possibility of dying some curtains, but I don't know anything about that (or if the dye would fade out).
It looks like there's a Joann's about eight miles from me. I probably wouldn't be there unless I'm in that area for something else. I may have been there once, when trying to figure out how to get green curtains around a year ago (if that's the place I'm thinking of, I think their labeled curtain material didn't include green, and I didn't know what else to do). I'm not sure there's anything but Wal-Mart close by, though I tend to overlook a lot of small businesses, so I'm not certain.

A bit late I know, but my two cents.
It reminds me of a cross between a military great coat (or a navy pea coat), and a "Highwayman's Coat".
That being said, I'd wear the hell out of it if I could afford one.

Very much looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Have you ever considered selling your patterns once you've gone through the refining stages? Or do you prefer to do custom commissions instead? I know retaining control of a pattern is exceptionally difficult once it's out in the wild, sadly.

Seems somewhat akin to a historical garment called a "Spanish Cloak", which could be buttoned up as a coat, a tabard, or some even with the side portions completely off... Most also had a removable hood and mantle portion, too~

Well, the idea of what you are doing is sitting right in the other room- I made a short (upper calf length) Spanish cloak. It has 176 button holes and buttons... and a round dozen hooks and eyes, too. Pain in the ASS to make, but awesome looking!

I'm actually working on a coat right now with removable hood and sleeves... I like how you have the sleeves coming right of the beginning of the arm. having the bottom part zip off is a cool idea too.
I like the design so far, the coat kinda has a mad scientist/steampunk feel to it too.

I'm seeing it now, it looks fantastic. Although, I think it'd be cool if the bottom "Skirt portion was removable too. Buttons would be a bit much, but a zipper on the inside would work well, without upsetting the overall aesthetic, I think. Great work, though! I'd love to have one of these!
