Description Here's all three views of the mask put together.
It used to be painted green with a goatee, but I got rid of all that and used metal to decorate it instead.
The idea is that I commonly (I'm sure alot of other people do to) say I'm doing good, or I'm happy, but really I'm just using my face as a mask to hide what I feel inside. Be it either loneliness, or heart break, etc. This mask is a manifestation of that concept. It's strong as metal, but still, it gets much abuse (used a rather course grit sanding wheel on a dremel and made a bunch of verticle lines across the entire piece) It also has tears of rivets running down the left side.
Now as for major decoration, there's gears on the left side. Cut my finger up with the smallest one (drilling the centre hole and it turned into a saw and bit my finger, not cleanly either) They represent how it works like clockwork, I'm asked how I'm doin' and I give the same answer... always. Clockwork
The other side of the face has a pretty border around it and in the middle of that there's an arrow pointing backwards, toward the dot. So as to say there's something in behind, this isn't as you see it.
Then there's the ties on the sides. Rather all ragged and tattered due to frequent use of the mask and on them are beads of bone, egg, wood, and glass. Sort of keeping the natural materials in there to make up for all the metal there is. protecting... hiding

This is phenomenal! I love it's aged and rugged look, and the conept behind it. Beautifully conceived and beutifully executed. Thanks for sharing!

Indeed! This is still one of my favorite sculptures It was really fun to make, hammering the metal into shape and seeing it come alive, so to say

first i looked at the mask and thought "what a beautiful piece of art and skill" and together with the title it made sense..

then i read your description and - wow!
so much thought in every detail...
very poetic.

great concept, great execution! and even mingled with your blood, i believe it gives it even deeper meaning
is it actually "your size"? do you have a picture wearing it? would be very interesting to see...

Marcusstratus In reply to ThundersSilence [2008-04-23 17:52:57 +0000 UTC]

It was made to be my size, but something went wrong in the process of making it... I think it's chin is to pointy or something. It doesn't fit me know so it's just a decorative piece.

ahh.... what a shame... still a great piece though

Aye, when I have the ability to make metal masks again, I'll then be practicing on making them wearable

Thanks! I actually made the entire mask! out of a sheet of nickel, 18g. that's why I submitted it to the club.

awesome I thought for some reason it said in the description that you took paint off of part of it. Perhaps I am misremembering - but it's really amazing fantastic job Nickel is some crazy hard stuff lol!

well, if you look deep into the abyss of my gallery you can see previous incarnations of the mask. one, like you saw it, one with the paint, and one without anything so you can see the nickel

i was thinking of getting into metal work -
what equipment do you need to make something like this?? :]

its really great,
i love how you incorperated the ragged strings and beads

Marcusstratus In reply to PeachBabies [2007-07-05 23:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Oi! thanks eh
As for equipment, I used a raising hammer (to hammer metal over shapes), a chasing hammer or planishing hammer (to make all the big bumps and divets even out), ball peen hammers (or other hammers with a spherical face). Then stakes come in very handy. large or small, tall or short, all sorts of different shapes. They're used to hammer the metal over. I don't have a large collection of stakes myself, so I also used what's called dapping punches. they're punches with a ball head. I prolly used them the most to get the nose, the lips etc. A torch or other great source of heat is very desirable because the metal gets harder and harder the more you pound on it, so you heat it up to anneal it (make it softer).

that's about it.... ahumm... yup... it also takes a bunch of practice as do all things

hmmm... alot of tools

i think i may just stick to clay -
start with metal when i have a little money left

thanks for the response though

That would indeed make it look better, but! this one if finished, if I do anything more to it I'd ruin the patina, scratch it all to hell, etc. So I'll keep your advice in mind for future projects
